There were different rooms on live chess before. Several for different languages, an Off Topics room and an un-moderated room which erik and piotr added for members to use.
They were there for quite some time, but were eventually removed as no-one used them :(

The essentially-unused implementation of other rooms worked for segregating chat, but unfortunately also completely segregated the players. Thus, if you were in Room B instead of Main Chat, you'd only have access to play players actually in Room B, not the entire 1000 players in Live Chess. While this makes some sense, it also clearly makes the feature nearly useless to many players.
The feature set actually desired is segregated chat but with access to many/all players. True, private and group chat provide a form of this in the current beta rev, and this works reasonably well, but getting in and out of group chat is too difficult (due to private control and ignorance of the rooms' existence) to make it a robust alternative to chatting in Main Chat. So ... the beta implementation doesn't really cut it, as most all admit.
But every bit of this is moot, in any case: in a matter of days to weeks, staff are going to be using Live Chess 2.0, which as erik has hinted will at least be somewhat different from a chat point of view. And then later this year, 3.0 will replace that with, again as erik has hinted, yet a different but purportedly superior chat arrangement.
Even after several months of dealing with the problems posed by those who choose to disrupt / corrupt the Live Chess chat, I still contend that chat provides an essential community aspect to Live Chess, one which - if it disappeared altogether - would represent a significant loss to the chess.com community as a whole. Still, improvements can and will be made, as management has indicated, and I welcome those.

This is a really old topic to dredge up. The Room implementation for chat is now group based. Help & Support has the most people in it but is not for general chat. For that, you need to join one of your group rooms.
