I'm with you Chungle. I've played on chess.com across multiple computers/isp's, etc, and some days I just have a consistent delay of 1-2 seconds processing every move, regardless of what I do, which, given that I play bullet, is a killer. Granted, I'm not a great player anyway, but it's really annoying to queue up 3 or 4 pre-moves and then realize 10 seconds is gone from the clock.
I lose on time too much. (Lag or connectivity or site issues)

Thanks for posting. Try doing as much research as you can for your connection. In my case my computer is pretty optimized (I use Chrome only for chess.com and it helps to clear the cache regularly. It also helps to have a freshly booted computer (I will leave aside the graphic card and processing capability your machine ideally needs.)) so was able to finally concentrate on what issues my connection had.
I was finally able to solve most of the outstanding concerns and can generally hold my own and be competitive again.

I can never seem to make up the lag deficit. I try but nothing seems to work for long. I'm pretty bitter about it but am trying to put it aside to see if anyone has any advice that I can use.
I've got a wired connection to the router and my latency out the door is pretty good. It's just that the site seems to be adding something which I can't compensate for no matter how fast I play.
I'm using chrome with no ad blocking switched on (sometimes you need to because the adverts are just beserk on certain times/days (and here too there doesn't seem to be a pattern...that I can compensate for) and on those days/times turning on the adblocker will show between 12-20(!) blocks before the game even starts (and of course I have to reload the page after every game because otherwise I'd have hundreds of blocks within a few minutes).
Of course using an adblocker regularly doesn't work because I'll lose around 5seconds per game which is impossible to be competitive with.... so I turn it off. And I turn off my Pi-hole because that too has too much overhead to allow me to be competitive.
It's the other times when no matter what I do, I can't keep up. If I go fast, my opponent is moving instantly (beyond premove instant..)
So, I'm at wit's end. What can I do?
You should be alright if you have a plan and simply develop average mouse skills.
No, it was beyond that. Impossible to make up the lag deficit I was laboring under. I play pretty quickly and my book is usable in bullet. I can't beat the cheaters so am not dealing with that here, but the connection issues I was having were definitely contributing to my losses (not to mention certain times of day when my geographic area is mostly online so the playing is basically moot --- and of course when the prime advertising times for the site mean my connection to here is secondary as well...and I'm not mentioning that particularly either...).
Anyway, I have a handle on what the problems were and have had them dealt with and am monitoring potential issues continuously -- I have to reboot my cable modem just before a session because the power levels start rising soon afterwards. I have to check that my cable from the wall isn't compromised by our couch (of all things!) pressing up against it too much...yeah, that was a weird one and got that one figured out when buying a new cable length of RG6 to replace the old one... And finally, the truck roll from the ISP identified a power anomaly so they installed a power attenuator on our line (at the modem). It turns out that the power levels from the modem were getting too high causing increased latency and in the end, frequent disconnects.
So, for now, my issue is mainly solved. That's not to absolve chess.com for their nasty live design which makes cheating almost too easy...up to and including NAMING THE LINE BEING PLAYED IN THE CURRENT GAME! That's an unconscionable mnemonic to hand an opponent.

Nobody has much lag, it's just a trick of the mind. Especially if you stumble or if your opponent is outwitting you.
You have to pay attention to your own position and what it calls for, , have a plan. even if it's not perfect, go with it, a faulty plan > no plan at all.
And watch out for your opponents threats. It will help to make the first step a lot easier, trust me.
Beyond that, just take 4 or 5 minutes a day to play aim hero. If you still can't handle the clock, you just need to work on your mechanical skills using your mouse and then everything will work out just fine.
Always the hunter, never the gun!
Happy hunting (:
Okay. Sure. Whatever you say.
Happy hunting. :/
I've been having some odd time issues recently too. I seem to, occasionally, be randomly losing a few seconds from my clock or my opponent seems to be able to play several moves using no time at all. At 1+0 bullet this is enough to make me lose pretty much every game.
What's more likely is a mental lapse. Especially in an intense game! If there were weird time isssues going on then your opponents would suffer too, and it would cause you to win half your games and lose the other half. The lag is in your brain, and that's a good thing because with good practice and conditioning, this is a problem you can totally control and overcome! Best of luck and happy chessing!
You could be right, but I think it's more likely some setup error. It's strange though as the issue appeared out of nowhere when I hadn't changed anything.

The lag detection on this site is a total joke. They don't appear to have a clue. I've seen it where I pre-move and the game log said I took 6 seconds. Clearly this is totally broken on the site.

Thanks for the reply.
I frankly don't think this is the case. I used to have the odd premium month here and there and found that it made no difference to my (let's say) win rate. This is why I'm not focusing on that aspect. I won't rule it out as a possibility but don't think that's the case here.
Now, I have just looked into my ISP's service and there is some instability on the power numbers --- and maybe that's the crux of it in my case -- a technician is booked to see to things in a couple of days.
Perhaps it's my provider's problem all along and for, well, years, I've had a substandard connection and that's all there is to it.
However, I still would like to feel out if anyone else is experiencing similar issues in case it isn't merely something here on my end.....not my personal equipment but my ISP's. That way, if this isn't the case then I can point to the performance of the live server as indicative of my connection having been fixed.
Does that make sense?
Phew, like I said, this has been going on for years, off and on, and I can't deal with it much longer since it's so frustrating.
You should get an ad blocker that doesn't notify you every time it blocks something.
I have a Pi-hole on my network. I have experimented with several permutations of off/on and have settled on what works well for me now. But yes, certainly something to have.

Give up speed chess and the problem will go away.
Give up trolling and you'll go away.

I can't explain, my network is over 100Mbps (both down & up) but when in chess game it lagged about 3-4 secs for each move. It's such a big problem in a bullet game, you can't win with this connection. Anyone kindly explain to me, please. Or I have to switch back to old connection with 25Mbps but faster much (only on chess.com)

It's the latency. The lag detection at Chess.com is useless and doesn't compensate for latency. If you're hitting the server at 100msec and your opponent is hitting it at 11msec well guess who loses everytime?

Hi folks,
Relatively new member on chess.com, and I have in the last couple of weeks just got back playing any form of chess for the first time in at least five years.
As such I am not a newbie to online chess, having played on various sites in the past. My own chess performances aside, which I am still trying to work on, my main issue - for this thread anyway - is the lag of moves I (far too) occasionally get. I play 1 0 controls mainly, and this happens to me usually in the finally few seconds, which as you may imagine is highly inconvenient! Apologies if it's the wrong terminology, but when I say lag, what I mean is there is a tiny jump/pause before my or my opponent's move is displayed.
From reading this thread, am I right in thinking that AdBlock also has a part in slowing things down?
Like I said I've played online chess for many years in the past, and I have never experienced this from the other sites I've played in; any lag would be attributed to my opponent, or the very rare ISP issue. And also to point out that if anything has changed with either my provider or my laptop, it would've been for the better not for the worse.
Anyway, any advice would be much appreciated - especially anything that wouldn't be too technically involving
Thanks very much in advance!
I have lag problem forever.
I just live with it and don't worry about ratings.
There is joy in blitz and speed chess win or lose.

Got any evidence for your claims? Or are you just making things up?

I play 3 minute games with no increment to avoid cheaters. and I consider myself a "not-too-slow" player. and yet my opponents usually have twice more time than me. so I'm pretty much used to losing on time. I don't think there is anything that can be done on my end to improve the situation, since I play the same format on lichess and I pressure people on time there but here it's reversed.
Should study "Time Management" in chess
So...blame the victim. Nice. Go away, troll.
