If you don't have enough material left to checkmate the opponent, then you cannot win the game anymore, not even if your opponent runs out of time. If he runs out, it's a draw. It's the rules.

Can someone explain to me how a timed game is drawn due to insufficient material when your opponents clock runs out and you have X number of seconds...say 50??? Why isn't the game won or lost due to time??? This makes no sense to me.
