Introducing...Auto-Abort!

I have been plagued by bad connections for a while now, and I know the pain of losing a game you have the upper hand in to the ultimate deathbringer...bad internet. So I'd like to introduce an idea I have to you all. Instead of being forced to resign in a game, I suggest it aborts instead. And since you can't control your connection, instead of losing maybe 10 - 20 points, you only lose half the amount you would.

Thoughts?

It's easy to control your connection if you happen to be losing a game, don't want to lose so many rating points so oops, accidentally on purpose disconnect!

People's internet connection is their own responsibility though.  If it is flaky then starting games at all is questionable.  Your opponent doesn't especially want to waste their time playing someone who keeps disconnecting either.

You make a very good point. However, I feel there should be a way to do this without being abused.

Instituting an auto-abort feature will make a bad situation worse.  The people that abort when losing, blunder, or get black 2 games in a row, etc. will all take advantage of this, and use the excuse "I had a bad connection."

If you have a bad connection then play longer time controls.  I have bottom of the line home internet, and play on a low end $250 laptop form walmart.  My connection is fine.

I understand this is a very easily abusable feature, and that some players on here will readily do it, however, if there was some penalty for faking your connection, maybe it'd be less abusable. I don't know how this would be coded, but if it was possible...

Let me ask you this.

How will you know someone abandoned a game as opposed to:

the power went out?

someone dug up a cable?

Flooding?

Fire?

was shut off for non payment.  But they lost their job because of this virus BS?

Lightning strike.

cat/dog chewed through a cable?

someone spilled water on the router?

See what i mean?  You dont know the reason.

And now for a bit of reality.  With all that is going on.  The virus, people losing their jobs, unable to pay bills, cant visit relatives, riots, looting, protests, just to name a few things.  And if none of that does it for you?  How about people dying?

How important are those online rating points in comparison?

You converted me, and you make very good points. I don't want to seem heartless. I understand the reality of the situation. I 100% agree with you.

Introducing Auto-Abort!!!! The easiest way to leave your opponents hanging, while also disappointing them on many levels. If you're in a chess game, but then you want a Big Mac, just press Auto-Abort. Auto-Abort is very simple and easy to use. Just go to the Auto-Abort button, use you magic pointer finger to press the button and BOOM you have left your opponent.

ATTENTION: Auto-Abort is not responsible for any reporting, blocking, trash-talking or yelling of any kind. It is your fault for using this product and it isn't our fault.

To get into an argument with a stranger, just use Auto-Abort. Auto-Abort, make a random person mad!! (Doo-doo)

I have an idea... first we can see if the person with bad connection has the upper hand in the game. the one with the upper hand wins!

glamdring27

So unscrupulous players just play until you have an advantage and then disconnect to claim a win?!!

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic, but...no. If you are, though, I acknowledge my idea is flawed and that it can be easily abused.
