Keyboard Shortcut/Control for Live Chess

Sort:

Is there a way to play live chess using the keyboard? I'd like to avoid having to use the mouse.I suppose those touchscreen tablets are ideal too;  something else to buy though...

Interesting, I want to know too, is there a shortcut to go back/forward between moves? I usually play on iPad, and it's convenient to toggle back/forward to see what just happened. Would be great to have that on the live chess too, like arrow left/right. :)

Any updates on this?

A simple way to enter moves using standard notation would be awesome; in fact, it really is necessary.

It would dramitcially increase accessibility to chess for a large number of people.

Most computers now have built in speech to text sofware; the hardest part of creating a hands free online chess environment has already been done.

People with vision limitations could play easily this way as well.

Blind play can be fun for everyone; you could even play while driving :)

Please consider this!

I'm a developer who'd be interested in working to implement keyboard navigation for the live chess app :)

you can use arrow keys to navigate through the moves.i am too lazy to use mouse so i usually use keyboard num lock [Accessibility Feature] to move the mouse pointer....lol. was wondering we have keyboard shortcuts.

I would also like to be able to type 'c2c4', for example, to move a pawn on c2 to c4.

Hey guys! If anybody is still interested in the feature I implemented a simple Google Chrome extension to support keyboard moves input on chess.com: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/bghaancnengidpcefpkbbppinjmfnlhh/publish-accepted?hl=en-US .

I'd be glad to hear any feedback.

It is open-source, you can see code here: https://github.com/everyonesdesign/Chess-Helper .

It only supports move in format like 'e2e4' now, but other formats may be implemented if there's interest for the extension.

There must be some keyboard shortcuts in the mix... I accidentally hit X on the keyboard and it flipped the board.    But, no idea where the list of shortcuts is.

This is great; nice work! Do you think it would be possible to integrate the arrow keys? I think this would allow the widest variety of input devices. Anyways, thank you!

@DanielJackson thank you! unfortunately I don't have a lot of time now to develop the project, but I hope that I'll be able to add new features during next months.
What do you mean when you say "integrate the arrow keys"? As I see it now:

  • you can choose the field from which you're starting the move
  • hit some key, e.g. space to confirm the field
  • then choose target field with arrows
  • confirm again to move

The interface looks pretty simple, although arrows are used now to go back/forth in moves history; so I'm not sure how to resolve this conflict (some users got used to old functionality, I don't think it is a good idea to break it).

Updated the extension, now it supports algebraic notation as well (e.g. "Nf3" or "0-0"). There's no support for promotion syntax yet (e8=Q), but I'll add it in upcoming releases.

UPD: the extension is available for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/chess-com-keyboard/

Hey! Thank you very much for the positive feedback.
I'm creating a separate topic in this forum to keep my eye on new feedback and to raise awareness about the extension.

If I click and grab a piece to move it but change my mind, is there a keyboard shortcut that will cancel the 'grabbed' piece?  Escape key would be nice
