What else sucks is when you go on Chess.com and read an article because of some time-sucking sore loser. You go back every couple of minutes. On the 3rd minute it says you lost because the game was abandoned. It wasn't even your turn! Why can't a player leave the game to do other things when it's not their turn? The other side is lost but the player is a sore loser! You should be able to leave and come back every so other often when they sit like that! They do this in regular tournaments when the clock isn't ticking.

Ummm... its called tabs, you don't need to do everthing on the same one...

I've even had a guy, from Indonesia if I remember correctly, not move for about 5 minutes.  Then when he thought I was gone he moved his piece so my time would start again.  It's pretty sad that you have to do that to keep your rating.  I ended up waiting until his time ran out anyway.   Sad Sad Sad.

Trysts, might I suggest Tuna? it comes in a can.

Peanut butter and jelly is a favorite.

And threadjacked.

for the person who lost when they went to read an article, i think you probably navigated out of live chess. as someone said, you should open another tab or window to go do something else. if that's not what happened, let us know, because it would be a bad bug.

as for the original complaint-- we aren't going to be doing anything to deal with this. it's really hard to judge who is just sitting there being rude vs. who had to run because their baby was screaming, or their internet died or... i'm not going to pretend it's not lame when it happens, but it's up to you to cope with it-- by finding other things to do while you wait. also, block them, and warn your friends about them.

one last idea-- if you know with 99% certainty that someone was doing it to be rude (as opposed to they were called away by life), and you see that they do it a couple times, send in an abuse report. support staff will send them a sportsmanship reminder, requiring an "i understand" response. (and they'll be on our radar if the behavior continues). please be pretty sure, and know that it's a repeat behavior, so that you don't flood our staff. thanks!

I really don't see the big deal. If you agreed to the game, then you should have set aside this time. So the only problem is... how to occupy yourself while you wait? You have a million options my friend. Don't stress over things you have no control over...life is too short.

Nearly every day in live chess I come across some idiot who thinks it would be a fun idea to leave the time running and not show me the decency of resigning.

I want to know how big of a thing this is, because I have asked multiple times to get something done about this and I'm beginning to be simply ignored at this stage.

The mods on live always say the same thing - that they have to give these idiots the benefit of the doubt and leave me out in the rain. Games that have 10 minutes left on the clock sometimes are just abandoned with a clearly lost possition and I'm told I'm just going to have to wait until the ass on the other side decides that I can finish the game. Its pathetic. The mods on live chess need to stop protecting these fools and close the game when its clearly lost.

Let me know if this happens to you much, I'm beginning to really think its just me.

Well, when you initiate a game with certain time controls, you also commit yourself to playing by those time controls. The opponent can watch adult entertainment instead of playing for all I care. It's their time, they can use it as they please.

TheGrobe

No, it's my time too, and although I signed up for the time limit, I also signed up for a game and watching my opponent's clock run down is not a game.

If I'm obligated to the part of the agreement that dictates how much time each of us gets, then my opponent should be obligated to live up to the part of the agreement where we agreed to actually play a game.

lordhypnoz

It all really comes down to manners and how they were brought up. Sore losers can be seen everywhere. All we can do is laugh it off and multitask. Open youtube or something, or start analyzing the game from the starting position. Sometimes it may just pay off.

sounds like we have a lot of poor winners .i agree it,s boring but you have the right to choise  how to lose ,whether by resigning, allowing your oppentent to checkmate you ,or losing by timing out.they are all part of chess therefore accepting the good and the bad well save a few grey hairs.

KillaNinja

Look, the fact of the matter is that you can tell quite clearly who has left without any good reason, and its by simply looking at the possition. You show the possition, we all see how he has just left because he has obviously lost, you close the game, and we get on with life. I can find something else to do with myself for 10 minutes, but I dont see why this cant just be done simply.

DominantBebop

I have a very simple solution. Every time I cross a player who disconnects or abandons a clearly lost gm. I simply add that player to my block list. Same applies to verbal smart asses. I do this at least once every time I log in. Can't stop the behavior but through the process of elimination you can cut out repeat offenders.

It is not this simple. I was in a loosing position recently, when my opponent timed-out...and this was in a tournament. There are literally millions on reasons why someone would time-out...and not all connected with bad intentions.
