In Sudden Death, if a player's clock runs out but his/her opponent does not have material sufficient for mating (e.g., lone K), then the opponent cannot be awarded a win, but is instead granted a draw. Very common method to adjudicate short time, sudden death games. It's not a glitch, but a design feature.
Live Chess Phenomena in Rated Games
What is Sudden Death and how do you turn it on and off? There usually /is/ sufficient material to checkmate, though... I'm pretty sure it's a glitch
Anyone know about the # of moves you can make before ratings/points are enforced? Yet another player hung his bishop just now then hit resign in the rated game without losing points...
ALL games in Live Chess are sudden death: if you run out of time, the game is over. If you have a specific game in mind, readers could examine it and make an assessment. Perhaps you can edit your original post and put a link to a game in question.
If White has made her/his 4th move and the game is a rated game, ratings will be adjusted based on outcome. Therefore, Fool's Mate will not result in a ratings adjustment, though it will show as a win and a loss.
Hope this helps.

Hi
Over the past few years I've noticed a couple of consistent, frequent, bizarre phenomena in Live Chess.
As you may guess I am referring to (i) when one player loses on time but a message saying "insufficient material" appears and the game is scored as if it were an actual draw and (ii) when players resign after a few moves and the game is not scored.
So I am curious about these things -- any useful info you might be able to provide?
This is just anecdotal, but over the past 9-10,000 live games on this server I noticed that situation (i) occurs most frequently in bullet, and if I am right it seems to happen more often in "close" games -- but ones where there is clearly enough material for a legal mate, sometimes even a queen or queens.
Situation (ii) is, I presume, not a glitch per se, but probably something intentional? At any rate I am mainly just curious what the exact number of moves you or an opponent can make before hitting resign causes rated games to be scored. I've noticed as I play stronger opponents they more frequently play wildly in the first few moves then simply hit resign if they make a mistake, since it doesn't cost them points. I'm trying to adapt to this...
Thanks!!
