live tournaments - quitting

Hi,

Just a suggestion for live tournaments:

When someone quits the tournament, don't take them off the standings for the tournament. Leave them on the leaderboard, but put an (A) or some other notification next to their names to indicate that they have abandoned.

It seems some people are quitting the tournament right after their last game, and being removed from the standings before the tournament finishes and not receiving their trophies.

they'd be out of the tournament, so why bother?

sometimes people leave a tournament early, but still have won enough games to finish in the top 3. That's why.

Just saw someone get third place in a 4-game tournament of 17 players with 2/4, by virtue of being one of the last three players left in.

We do want to punish people for quitting before the end, but not just after the end and before the final results go up.

Punish people for not playing chess? not really appropriate.

I think they just need reeducating:

Your hand is fused to the mouse, you cannot look away....now finish your games!

On the plus side, nothing wrong with a little of the Ludwig Van.

Guess I meant "not reward" rather than "punish", but PrawnEatsPrawn's idea has a lot of merit.
