Awesome milestone for us today! Live Chess tournaments are now available to all premium members! Laughing

Like it says in the warning, this is very much a public beta stage: You might encounter issues (although it already seems very solid), and the team is still actively working on interface improvements.

If you're unsure how these work or how to register, please review the new FAQ.

Please share your questions, impressions, suggestions, ideas, or war stories!

First of all: live tournaments are GREAT! thx for makin em!

When i go to the standings tab, and i click on someones name, I only see 'undefined'

instead of there name, rating n stuff, hope u fix that

Avatar of ChessisGood

Yup, the standings stuff needs serious debugging. Otherwise, I'm loving it!

I won 3rd place!!! (But only because the tournament glitched for my oppenent.) :)

when will free members be able to play in live tournaments?

Avatar of Jpatrick

I haven't actually played in a live event yet.  Seven rounds is quite a lot.  I'd suggest doing this in smaller bites.  Maybe you could fill up four man quads.  That way you only need three rounds.

I think this is a major step in the right direction. Perhaps we could get seeded single-elimination tournaments for those who don't want to play a bunch of rounds. Thanks to the support staff for putting this together. A lot of members really wanted this.

what happens with players that withdraw before end of tournament?

Avatar of piotr

They can't win :). They are removed from standings. What exactly do you need to know?

Cheers!

it is possible to see the tournament results days later or only at time when tournament runs

In the one tourney I was in, the cancellation code was tested and works. It might be useful for a dialog box for info though, or make the "cancelled" in red or something.

Also, I found ,yself googling "what time is it" because I knew what time the tourney was supposed to start, but didn't know what time the server thought it was.

The start time is relative to your very own computer clock! No need to call Greenwich! :D

We'll be adding some pages to the main site in the not-too-distant future (not 100% sure when they will be complete) that will show details about past Live tournaments, similar to the existing pages for e-chess tournaments.

Relative to my own computer clock! Brilliant! How very Steve Jobs of you.

1. you are only shown tournaments you can join (except for those marked OPEN)

2. we are only showing 6 tournaments at a time right now, plus one open. there aren't many that are the same.

3. great suggestion!

Avatar of ozzie_c_cobblepot

Just had a close call. I really want to play in one, but it was cxl'd with 5 people (min 6 I'm told).

  1. I see that hovering over the tourney gives the details, but I was told this after asking for the feature in chat. You have to wait "pretty long" to get the details. Please don't consider this to be whining. Also, I'm using the simple live chess interface.
  2. I'm guessing that the participation will be higher once it's out of beta.

The system as it stands is inadequate.  It is misleading to list numerous tournament start times when few if any begin due to player involvement.  Currently, I must wait and avoid playing games repeatedly to make sure I am available for a tournament that I signed in for.  Then, my time waiting was shown to be wasted because no-one else wanted to play.  People try to play and then the tournament cancels.  Your current setup asks the players to just hang around and continually wait for the next starting interval.  One word for this system: FAIL!

If you MUST automate it, then have the server setup continuous tournaments that register one after another as they end.  The tournament stay open until a certain minimum is filled.  Once the minimum is met, the server announces the tournament will begin in X minutes so late players can jump in.

VERY annoying experience today with the constant cancels and waiting.

jerk! we have been asking chess.com to make live tournys and they did it (they are still working out the bugs genius) ty chess.com for the live tournys by far will be my favorite tool
