Illegal to think racist thoughts?  Or only if you act on those thoughts?

I think the wording on that statement could have been better: of course you cannot be prosecuted for your thoughts. In Finland, there's the crime of "incitement against an ethnic group", which may consist of simply posting something hateful on your personal website. I'd imagine a similar law exists in most western countries, especially here in Europe, where the ghost of Nazi Germany still haunts us.

To the original poster: Unless the guy that was giving you a hard time had a pretty well filled out profile-- like maybe he had a picture, some stuff about upcoming comedy gigs, or something like that-- there is a chance he's a "kid" (relative term) who put down a fake birthday.  I know on FB and it used to be especially on My Space people I knew that were in their 20s would give birthdays like hey were 99 years old.

I'm certainly not excusing a rotten person's behavior, young or old, but just saying he might not've been 50.

I always insult the winner after it's win. I tell it how small it's RAM is and it's CPU isn't even a dual core.

I'll will give the thing some credit. So far it's only responded with some crack about my receding hair line and that I haven't seen my toes in 10 years...

Complete freedom of speech doesn't exist anywhere, as you pointed out. But as for freedom of expression, the U.S. is the only country in the world where burning the U.S. flag is illegal. Tongue out

Alas, completely wrong... check wikipedia Azukikaru: It is NOT illegal to burn a flag in the US.

Wikipedia article on flag desecration

"The flag of the United States is sometimes symbolically burnt, often in protest of the policies of the American government, both within the country and abroad. The United States Supreme Court in Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), and reaffirmed in U.S. v. Eichman, 496 U.S. 310 (1990), has ruled that due to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, it is unconstitutional for a government (whether federal, state, or municipality) to prohibit the desecration of a flag, due to its status as "symbolic speech."

People have been jailed for burning the American flag in their own countries (for instance, Serbia -- see wiki article linked above) and although I have the freedom to burn my flag, you probably shouldn't try burning yours at home. It's illegal for to burn the Finnish flag, in FinlandTongue out. (According to that wikilink above).

Yes, completely untrue, as pointed out by JG27Pyth.  In fact, it would require an amendment to our constitution to make burning the flag illegal.  The reason the issue of the legality is in the news periodically is that for the past few decades many right-wingers have proposed trying to add just such an amendment, and they bring it up every election.

Maybe Pakistan would be more successful if your own country had not pursued a divide and conquer strategy there for almost 100 years Sheardp

I think it's sad that people are sore losers.Ignore them. It's only the people who think they're better than everyone else which actually makes them worse than everyone else so are really inviting people to laugh at themLaughing.

Henster97

Maybe my comment above was a bit strong against sore losers but oh well.

My bad, I based that on hearsay. Gotta stop listening to that European left-wing propaganda. I should know better, I grew up in Massachusetts.

But I'm aware of flag laws here - you can't even fly a Finnish flag unless it's on a specific day. Also, most people don't bother with flags here, so you basically just see flags around public buildings on certain days, and you think, "What day is it today? The flags are up." And if you ask someone, the answer is usually, "I dunno." It's a sharp contrast to the U.S., where you can see flags flying everywhere all the time.

Well, you should be.  You guys have a crappy climate and even worse food.  Still, it could be worse (on both counts):  you could be Scottish.

... or Finnish. Wink

I have never had anyone be abusive towards me, but if they were, I would just have a delicious rye smile to myself, knowing that I had kicked their a $$ on a chess board, prompting them to be abusive. That is the only defence they have, beecause their chess defences have been mutilated.
