Message To People Who Disable Chat

I wonder how many people who've disabled chat will come here to read this thread... Laughing

Talking during a game is just rude.  No proper player does that over the board so why it is an option online I have no idea.  If I really want to say 'gg' to someone or even break out my creativity and form a sentence after a game then I have it wthin my skill set to navigate to their notes page and post there.

I don't want to wish my opponent good luck or have him wish me good luck before a game.  We're playing chess, not roulette, why would anyone be wishing someone luck for a game of chess?

If people choose to not ask for a rematch because I disable chat then that is all the more reason for doing so.  We played a game, now move along, we're not getting married, just play someone else next!

I have lost games on time because i can only type with one finger

The only reason I do not say "good game" is because not everyone speaks English

I dunno some people take it very seriously, there should be a place for trash talk but nothing bordering on getting personal, the problem, is not everyone knows where the tone control is.

glamdring27

Trash talking in a non-personal way seems a bit odd!

Dear Matthew,

and dear all,

for once I will not give the name,

after reading this discussion, i said Hi to people and GL like this

hi, gl

the reaction was : he disabled the chat after move 2.

I resigned before move 3 not willing to play this peasant ..., who cares about points on chess.com anyway.

See now I like this kind of thinking. It is an insult to have chat disabled on you for no reason!

glamdring27

It's an insult to have your opponent wish you luck too!

Why can't I do something simple like play a game of chess without offending somebody? I don't like to talk.

A message to people who make threads about people not chatting....

find something more meaningful at which to take umbrage.

One would think but the point of trash talk is that its not intended to be personal nor taken personally, its just banter, on the other hand if someone starts to insult your mom or your sister, or is malicious or vindictive, well thats something entirely different, surely?

glamdring27

Of course, but what kind of trash talk isn't personal?  I don't trash talk at all so I have no idea, but if you aren't saying something specific to your opponent then what is its purpose.  And I don't mean insulting their family etc, but saying "You are rubbish at chess" is personal.

RoobieRoo

Nah dude you seem to misunderstand, trash talk is just bravado, its nothing personal, like Bobby Fischer, 'I'm the greatest everyone knows I'm the greatest and i don't need a match to prove it' etc etc  Like I was playing this dude on FICS and he was trash talking me saying I was a weak player etc , I just laughed, when i started to get the better of him i mocked him by stating that 'its getting roasty toasty' for him, he said 'stop taking drugs kiddo', its just meaningless bravado and good fun if the tone is correct.  Calling people a mutha***** is not trash talk, its sinister and creepy and has no place anywhere.

I have chat disabled all the time. For me online play is abstract.

a "hello, how are you, wish you a good game" is a bit too much to ask then ?

We found it with a faint pulse, stabilized it, cleaned its wounds, put it through several painful months of rehabilitation, and then finally led it to a surprise celebration where instead of greeting it with cake and balloons we just used baseball bats.
