I guess there are good reasons to disable chat but still I find it rather rude especially having them do it AFTER I say good game to them. Then they think they can just rematch me. Then the other kind of person just disables it completely. I still think that you shouldn't disable it until someone says something bad.
Message To People Who Disable Chat

And then you'll be in the forums whining because I ignore the chat. I respect your desire to make friends if you respect that I'm not. I just want to play.
"Thanks you for your time" and give them a smiley if it was an intense game (online that is)
I give them a trophy if it was a good online game.

oh

Here's an idea: when abusive messages arrive via chat, don't disable it. Don't respond either, and let the perp waste their time, and thicken your skin in the process. I've noticed that ignoring people who insult me usually makes them become hysterical. Let them stew in their own psychological juices.
I want to play chess, not psychological games, so I have chat permanently disabled (allowed only for people on my friends list).
I play 3 minutes games, so it would be too strange to get a deep insight of anything.

I received throphies with sarcasm... ironic.. from angry people. I found out that people with 15-25k games or more are often crazy ones. I played 4 unrated games vs one guy and ended 2-2. 2 white and 2 black games. I tryed openings etc. Then i click new game - 15 sec later i received trophy with msg 2-2 you are good student.. ... (i was higher rated but he played so badly even with my rare openings that i dont play i made even score and probably will beat him in rated game and saying i was like his student LOL...
30 min later i played him (i did not know he was that guy) and he won 1st game and he started insulting me haha idiot moron haha etc etc..
I got a "WOW" trophy after a game, with the text: "No rematch? Wow, just wow!".
Now that you mentioned ending 2-2, after I ended like that with some other guy, he wrote in my notes: "Haha! Chicken that runs after losing" (it was a win-loss-win-loss for me).

Just noticing, you are a chicken if you leave after a loss, you are a chicken if you leave after a win... I was even called coward once because of leaving after a draw!

When i first started playing here, chat was not disabled. Until the idiots started showing themselves with insults. Win or lose, good game or not, disabling the chat is the only secure way to avoid these morons -unfortunately. These imbecills even go to the length of sending messages and posting on your profile page instead...and not to say gg!
People don't disable chat because you want to wish them well O.P. It's just that they don't want to read the equivalent of bleeding War and Peace during a game!!
For once, a useful post by kaynight. I completely agree.

I don't want to play psychological games either, that's why I suggested learning to ignore offensive messages. It's not a matter of learning anything from anti-social people (what's there to learn from them? We already know they're unhappy). My suggestion is meant more as a way of thickening our skin, so that these jabs from random strangers don't bother us so much anymore, even when we see them.
Think about it: why should the arrival of some unfriendly words on our computer screen affect our emotions so profoundly? Why is it so easy for strangers to "push our buttons"? They did not physically injure us. It's all in our minds. We should have better control of our own reactions. But if members prefers to simply disable chat, that's cool too. I don't mean to be preachy about it.

If you do not want to disable chat:
- Pray you face kind opponent.
- Ignore them, becouse morons will never end... is hard and not good idea. It's like walking on street and every 2nd person to insult you and you just don't care is out of question. So Fight back with words.. As i said most of them are kids who knows only 3 words so winning this battle must be easy. But that will never end also, at least you might win the battle.
- Get better in chess and crush them, crush them all. Also higher rated you go, is more likely those insults to get rare.

2) If somebody is going to do that... they have to remember that they can get reported and banned (the "but he hit me first" excuse doesn´t work here either, like it didn´t in high school).
3) Remember that Nakamura accused a kid here of being Carlsen using a random account? hehe

I got one with 7,000 blitz games that wrote in my notes after losing (since I already had chat disabled at that point):
"You are a disgussting portuguese pig, I´m happy that your country is in crisis!"
He got his account closed after I reported him.
Whenever I lose I say gg.
If people say gg to me when they lose, I say it back.
crisis solved.
Amen.
