Most people don't disable chat as soon as the game starts, they have it permanently disabled so it just shows up saying it is disabled when the game starts.

 Still though.

Do you really want people to believe it is wrong to disable chat?

I just think it is pointless.

it is far from beiing pointless, although we have seen people here claiming that morons do not disturb them with their stupid comments. Trust me, the majority of people here do not like that.

I am sorry that a simple gg is offensive and stupid. I try to be nice. Not many people are mean either and if they are block THEM

i was not aware that you were talking about the possible offensiveness of a 'gg'. thats a completely different question of course, because it depends on context. but some people use 'gg' in a malicious, ironic, sometimes playful way also maybe, but it takes two to tango... also i you play one game from time to time, and like to chat while playing thats your choice. but when people like me play tons of games in a row, and don't want to chat in the first place the option of disabling is pure gold. aslo i ve blocked some people -obviously- for other reasons than insults. Did you know, for one thing, that there is a way to insult someone who has schat disabled? you can fake trying to chat repeat tively. so that 'x has disabled chat' appears many times in the chat box. people do that also. do not undersestimate humans capacity to be a**les, never.

Ok, block the a**holes then. Go for it. But not everyone is like that. Some people are nice. Half the people don't chat anyways. And most of the time they are nice people who want to say gg or gl or talk about the game or likewise. The disable button is for when someone is insulting you.

My mum said that if you really feel the need to communicate with strangers then give the Samaritans a call.

The first question is, WAS it a good game.   That is, no serious mistakes, blunders, inaccuracies by either side?  The kind of game that would be lauded if played between two players in the public spotlight?

If so then maybe you are right to be miffed.   If it was just a sloppy exhibition of chess and your opponent knows he played below even his mediocre level, then I can see he might not be interested in happy horseshit being flung at him by some gleeful giggly winner who stumbled across the line first.   If he simply quietly disabled you then you should hardenthefukup and move on.

You should know by now this forum has extremely low tolerance for public whiners.  To me that would actually be an incentive to whine about something publicly now that I think about it.  So sit back and enjoy the responses you get that aren't exactly what you were expecting.

I'm fairly new to site and right now I play only correspondence games but I hope to try out live games later this year. I already know if I encounter enough rude opponents, I intend to disable chat. I don't know yet what "enough" will be. Anyone who insists that I do otherwise just so he can prove his niceness to me at the end of the game does not seem all that nice to me. If you want to rail against anyone, rail against the players who make people like me want to disable chat in the first place.

Suman3

I never disabled chat, but then you get some experience, some good players here are fun to play with but offensive in the chat, maybe they get too excited about their win or loss, they make rude and often obscene remarks, disabled chat while playing those good opponents, after all the game says all there is to say! :)

no

Why would you say "good game" when most likely it wasn't a good game?

lfPatriotGames

I never play people who disable chat. I understand their reasons for doing it, and that is their right. But it's my right to not play them too. I think chess is a social activity so it makes sense to have the option to communicate. Not saying good game, or inquiring about parts of the game would be like playing tennis and never shaking hands or talking to the opponent. It would just be weird.

TurboFish

Starting a game with chat already disabled could also be considered polite -- it assures the opponent that they won't be bothered during the game with the unnecesarry distraction of chatting.  If one player wants to communicate with the other after the game, a private message would work nicely.  But to each her/his own.  I'll play anyone, don't care (don't even notice) if the chat is disabled or not.

glamdring27

You're not allowed to talk to your opponent during the game in an over the board game so it's hardly a social activity!

Chess is basically an anti-social game.  Chess Clubs, however, can be social.  Chess requires no talking nor is chatting even a desirable component of the game.  In fact, talking can be counterproductive.  Some people like to talk during a game. That's fine for them.  Some people don't. That's fine for them.  Refusing to play someone because they won't chat seems (to me) to make you anti-social, and not the opposite which you seem to claim to be.

Pulpofeira

You have to type, that's the problem. I love trash talking in OTB blitz with close friends, and I curse terribly (always against myself) in online games, wich sometimes leads to domestic problems but helps a lot my performance. But that's another matter of course.

TurboFish

Even during a 10 minute game (my usual time control for a live game), I can't chat without getting into time trouble. So receiving a friendly chat can be awkward since I might not be able to respond until after the game.

datfreshmandude

Its always nice to say good luck or something like that, but it seems terribly dumb to get upset if someone would rather not talk.  Also, some people would rather not run the risk of meeting a troll.  A lot of those trolls out there run when they see chat disabled.  Not respecting an opponents decision to decline a conversation is less polite than their 'rude behaviour' to begin with.
