Thats a silly way to get banned.

Why would you say "good game" when most likely it wasn't a good game?

It is the nice thing to do. Or at least say thanks for the game. Chess manners.

Saying some form of "thank you" after a game definitely seems the safest and most honest.  Even if you're not aware of any mistakes, an opponent who just lost probably realizes he/she erred, and can't see the sincere expression on the opponent's friendly face, and could therefore easily interpret an incoming  "good game" comment as a sarcastic taunt.  Why risk that?  Texting is a poor communications medium when emotions are involved, so we need to choose our words carefully.

I guess "good luck" or "play well" before the game is innocuous.  But when I send such up-front greetings, about half the time I get no reply, even in slow/correspondence games.  Could be the person at the other end of the wire didn't notice, or doesn't speak English, or doesn't want to risk getting sucked into a banal conversation.  Or some reason I've never thought of.  But it doesn't really matter.  I'm satisfied if they just don't abandon the game.

But I rarely type anything during the game, unless it's to complement an opponent's amazingly good move, or too cry "ouch" when I royally blunder.  But even then I limit myself to a few words, then get back to focussing on the game.  If I really want to discuss something with the opponent, I send a private message after the game -- that usually gets at least a cordial response.

We are social creatures. Sorry I am social and out going... Its actually a good skill!

Lol , you have not recieved some of the private messages I have, most of them are the same stupid stuff, apart from the pictures, they are just fakes.

I imagine that women get a far greater quantity of unpleasant messages than men do, since most anti-social/mentally-disturbed people are probably heterosexual men.

MasterMatthew52

Yes. Some people are mean... not all. Either way deal with it. It's funny to see how mad people get over chess. lol

MasterMatthew52

haha True Fkey... Also Kaynight you have a point lol. My name could be Jessica for all you know and not Matthew Wink

Who knows who are male/female here?

I'm just extrapolating from a lifetime of personal face-to-face experience.  Most jerks are guys.  Just as most prison inmates are guys.  I don't think it's merely a coincidence.

I move kind of slow sometimes & people sometimes get impatient & make,  in my opinion, somewhat silly talk. The other day, when I was taking a few minutes to ponder my next move my oponent gave me a "  1...2...3 " comment. After gaining a dominant advantage I thoroughly enjoyed giving him a comment back when pressing the mate of " 3...2...1

P.S.  People who don't have their pants on can be described as EMBAREASSED.               CHESS RULES !!!

complement - in this situation that would mean make a comparably good move

compliment - praise a move

Just get better at chess and crush those people, best way is to beat them again and again, usually they are low rated few exceptions.

Hi Chastity, you're very observant.  I was thinking "compliment" (although I would also like to complement my opponent's great move Wink), but since English is not very phonetic, and because I don't use spell-check, I often misspell words.  But thanks -- I don't mind being corrected.  I welcome any feedback that might help me improve my clarity.

Absolutely an argument in favor of disabling chat completely during all games. Disabling chat beforehand is an easy and effective way to "deal with it."

You're not allowed to talk to your opponent during the game in an over the board game so it's hardly a social activity!

I cant speak to where you play chess, but I have never played a game, in the many hundreds I have played, where we didnt talk. How do you arrange a game if you dont even talk? And why would you play somone who isn't going to talk? I dont get that at all. I would say, since chess is a social activity by definition, that it would be extaordinarily weird and uncomfortable to play, say your best friend, brother, or someone at game night on Saturday night and never talk to them. Other than sign language I dont see how it would work.
