You can. In an unrated game when your friend knows you are using an engine and allowed it then it would be ok, though that permission wouldn't be something staff would be aware of, so is still risky.

Wait even if his account gets closed his friend could defend him and get his account opened right ?

Only if the reason for closure was that game(s) and they were unrated.

What if it was rated? Could chess.com just revoke the games ELO changes?

That would be up to staff to decide.

Isn't this a total "cop out"?

No. The more specifics that are known makes it easier for people trying to beat the system.

i guess you could get banned, even if it was a friendly match

Well true. I was going on my limited experience with Fair Play, where it took me over 7 emails to figure out what I had supposedly done. Turns out that it wasn't even that!

How hard is it just to explain to people what they have (supposedly) done, it would save so much time going back and forth trying to figure out what was wrong...

Use of an engine against other members is not allowed, even in unrated.

Perhaps chess.com should have a separate category known as "Centaur" where human + computer can play against human + computer, or human + computer against just human as long as the human playing against human + computer understands the category.

My guess is that isn't ever going to happen.

Probably a pretty good guess.

#18 only with the other member's permission, in unrated games. And how would you know better than a chess.com moderator that has been moderating for years and knows all the rules, while you have joined a day ago?

yes it is

It specifies that using an engine in a rated game is not allowed. why would they specify that the games are rated and not just "using an engine in a live game" unless unrated games were fine?

Use of engines against another player is strictly prohibited. Doing so in unrated games will get an account closed.

because I can read? The rules in the article the staff member linked literally says if the games are unrated and the 2nd person is aware of it then it's fine but then the mod contradicts it by saying it will get you banned

The rules used to allow engine use in unrated games if your opponent was aware but that is no longer the case and hasn't been for at least a year.

For Daily

  • You may not seek opinions from an engine or another person regarding the opening database, tablebases, self-preparation, or analysis related to a specific game in progress on Chess.com

For Live

  • In Live Chess, no outside assistance of any kind is permitted.

No staff have posted in this topic. I posted in both cases and the rules changed between those posts meh
