New Logic for Auto-pairing and Seek Graph!

Personally I like the new system better. Makes the challenges more fair. It sucks selecting a certain rating that wish to play and you find out your opponents way under rated due to 95% of their games being against higher rated opponents kicking them down a peg or two.

what? this doesn't make any sense to me. I wonder as to what time control this person usually plays. if they are exclusively playing the 1 0 time control, then it's very possible and plausible to run into considerably strong players with 1500-1600 ratings; it's just the nature of the time control. I've seen a Ukranian IM who plays the 1 0 time control exclusively and had only a 1500 or so rating....just to provide some perspective.

there really should be separate ratings for both bullet and lightning. the 1m 0s time control is vastly different from a 2m 0s or 3m 0s or 2m 2s time control.

(also there are apparently certain people who will deliberately keep their ratings artificially low in order to "surprise unsuspecting" people for the "lulz" (? don't ask me ?). this is what they do: throw games to get an artificially low 1500-1700 rating when they should really have a 1900-2000 or above rating if they had honestly played all their games--- i.e. you shouldn't really come across them until you get to the 1900-2000 point too but they want to "lulz" so instead you run into them when crossing through the 1400-1700s. of course there's no way to stop or prove this really weird and strange type of dishonest sandbagging-esque type activity and I don't really understand it at all but apparently some people find it highly amusing to do this from what I've read around the site.)

I can catergorically state after a week of this new set-up , that its utter pants.

Virtually all of my live game play is 30 min unrated , yet now each time i issue a game seek / challenge , within 30 secs the same stupid patronising message window appears in the middle of the screen completely spoiling my watching of the current top game whilst awaiting a game.

It feels as if im being bullied into playing rated games which i rarely play because my internet connection is garbage and i've lost countless points because of it.

And to make matters worse , after a minute or so of closing this message window , my seek dissappears from the game graphs , meaning i have to cancel then re-issue the challenge to keep it active and on the screen ,  then the message pops up again.

As said by others , the old system wasnt broke but you went and f***ed it up anyway as it probably seemed a good idea at some shite meeting.

I agree. I used to play so many rated games every day, now i find myself playing the computers instead. This site was great befoer the changes happened. Now it is a big steaming pile of sh1t

I don't really understand why people seem to be waiting longer for games. all that changed is that you can no longer set the range to something like 0 min 200 max and also can no longer see many of the seeks on the graph

Jimmykay

I suspect the only people who are waiting longer are the people who selfishlessly set their parameters at things like 0 +200.

knightkrawlirr

0 200 is useful if you're exclusively playing 1 0 time control.

Useful? What do you mean? If everyone did this, it woud ruin the site, as matching would take forever...think it through.

The new  way to match people does not work as it forces me to deliberately abort to avoid playing unsuitable matches

for example? What are you considering unsuitable?

I dont understand why that is a problem. Even if you set it on +200 - + 500. So you then seek for stronger players...

1) its up to a stronger player if he/she wants to play against a lower rated player: if the player doesnt want low rated players then he/she should set their range to +0 to +something.
2) if the player keeps the +200 - +500 range, and he has been sandbagging, then eventually he'll grow in rating and after a while the 'fun' is over.
In this scenario a stronger player has been victimized for a couple points. But he/she will gain these again if he is as strong as his old rating suggests.
3) there are also players that set their rating on -500 - -200. Is that a problem as well? Doesnt that cancel out the other people with +200 - +500?

I used to vary greatly with my ranges. Sometimes only stronger players (+0 - +300), other days only my level (-100 +100) and other days (-1000 and +1000). If I understand everything correct setting the range at (+0 +300) is no longer very usefull as I will only be paired with people of roughly my rating.

The only thing I did not like was the time searching for a good opponent! It takes a lot of time.

MikeCrockett

I think setting a range causes chess to become stale, creating a lack of diversity in playing strength which in turn can hurt your ability to adapt to the unorthodox play of a weaker opponent. Ratings were intended to measure your strength across a broad population of skills, not a select few.

PossibleOatmeal

A notable feature of the otb comparison is that players can choose to play up a section.

overseaer1

It doesn't work, I set ratings to 1300-1400 and need to constantly reset it after every match!

aman_makhija

What if I want to play people stronger than me? I have to wait for 15 mins?

chrka

FarTooLoud, I guess you're pretty high rated? I suppose that chess.com should take the number of available players in consideration when choosing the brackets. (They might be doing that already, but judging from what you say I'd guess not.)

iamtoonice1

Takes so long to be matched up to an opponent here, it makes me want to play someplace else. I have waited five minutes one time six minutes the other and I just gave up.

mrhjornevik

can I do something to avoid people who seek out weaker players? I have a feeling some of the players on this site deliberaty play weak players to raise their rating.

I would also have a 100 game winning streak if I only played players with +0 -200

May we please have an option when creating a seek so that ONLY premium members can accept it?

why would you want that? Half the posts her is crying about how the matching takes to long already.
