opponent resignation

An opponent resigned after one move and then warned me never to contact him again. I am very insulted. I did nothing wrong. What can i do?

artfizz

Nothing. Just accept the points.

Perhaps you committed one of the 7 Deadly Sins of chess, such as chatting during the game?

belaqua

I said "hi" at the start.

belaqua

I accept that any opponent can decide to do whatever suits them, but he could not, unless he is clairvoyant, have discovered some gross moral turpidtude in me, for example, as a result of my one move, so horrible as to cause him to retreat in disgust. But yes, you are right, I accept the "win" with enthusiam..

artfizz

I suspect the opponent may have confused you with someone else. (Either that, or they really don't like anyone who says "hi").

belaqua

True enough, this "Hi" instead of "Hello," or "Good day," or "Pleased to meet you," has become like a currency we accept without thinking. Maybe we should object to it.

Thanks anyway for your suggestions.

Some tips on appropriate addressing protocols here: its-merely-a-formality-sir.

Fascinating! But what to do when one`s opponent is a WOMAN?

My problem was, however, with someone who on the basis of a single move ( a common, pawn move- nothing unusual or subversive) took the most extreme step, the humiliating step, of resigning, rather than risking contaminating himself by sharing cyber-space and cyber-timewith me.

Could it really have been because I had used the cheery salutation, ""hi"?

Again, thanks, and by now I have lost the sense of smart..

Loomis

Ever consider that there is something wrong with your opponent and not something wrong with you?

ReedRichards

This is ridiculous but I read someone's blog saying he does not play opponents who are from particular nations...can you believe this...and here I thought chess players were intelligent.

Would you rather play someone from the worst-chess-playing-nation - or the best? From the worst obviously: you'd get more points that way.

DesertPrince

It might be that someone could not play particular nation, I point to Bobby Fisher concerning his nations political enviorment. ~~~~ DP:

I'm talking about right here at chess.com...it's call discrimination.

Loomis

Surprise, chess players are a cross section of the population at large. They include jerks, bigots, racists, sexists, etc.

MM78

judging by the standard of his play in his other games it probably just saved him some time.

Happened to me.A 1700 player resigned after one move.I asked him why he had done that but he didnt have the courtesy to reply.Later found out he was from Iran.Maybe that was the reason.

gordonyoung

Could be true.I said maybe

belaqua

Thank you all for all the insights.

To MM78 from Ireland- he wasn`t up against a great opponent in me! It wouldn`t have been for that reason.

Chess happens.

Kernicterus

I had a weird encounter a few days back, myself.

A person asked if I was of a particular faith and told me he could not play chess against people of my faith.  So I said..."ok, you can resign".  Bizarre.
