Hello :D! This post are all about the pawns, ITS TAKEN FROM THE GREAT J SILMAN...(if you like, read his books... so great!!!!) i hope you will appreciate...

Weak and strong pawns

Firstly, we can have many types of weak pawns.  There are:

the unprotected pawn

- the unadequately defend pawn

- the isolate pawn

- the doubled pawns

- the backward pawn

For the strong pawns, we often talk about a:

- passed pawn

- strong center pawns

- pawns majority ( is the fact to have more pawn that you're opponen in one side of the board).

Note: we often heard that doubled pawns, backward or isolate pawn are always weaks but its not always true.... The most of the time yes, but not every time.Key1 : In fact, a pawn are weak only if the ennemy army can get to it!!!

 Weak pawns

Doubled pawns

Key 1: The doubled pawns can give some little advantage to the owner in some particular situations

-it can give at his owner a half-open file or a open file to place his rook on it.

-if theses pawns are central, they can allow at the owner the coverage of some critical center squares.

let's get an eye on it...

I think that i don't have to show you examples of bad doubled pawns because i'm sure that you have a lot of this already in mind!...

Isolated pawns

When you play with....

Key 1: there often open file on either side of the isolated pawn...  If you are the owner of this kind of pawn, try to control theses open files by putting rook's on it.

Key 2: if you are the owner of these kind of pawn, and if you can do it, try to advance it and it might turn into a great battering ram for your attack!

Key 3: if you have a isolated pawn and you can easily advance it and trade it, this pawn are NOT a weakness.

Key 4: With a isolated pawn, if you're contrain to be left with only one major piece to act like defender, you're better to have a queen that a rook.

When you play against it...

Key 5: When you play against a isolated pawn, is often a real good idea TO AVOID the rook exchange!!

Key 6: When you play against a isolated pawn, the square right in front of this pawn are often a really good advanced point (for your knight by example)!

backward pawn

Key 1: to know if a backward pawn is no so bad or really waek you have to ask you some questions:

-Is it sitting on a open file? (backward pawn tend to be vulnerable to attack if it are on a open file).

-How well it is defend?

-is the square right in front of it are adequately defended?

-is this backward pawn are useful for a pawn sit ahead of it by defending it?

-Can it advance successfully? (because as an isolated pawn, if the backward pawn can advance safely, then it's not a real weakness). (And when you play against a backward pawn, is often a good idea to try to prevent such advance by putting a piece in the square right in front of it).

strong pawns

passed pawn

Key 1:  The passed pawn became a real attacking force for the owner in the endgame!!!

Let's see a great example of it...

key 2: You should never allow an ennemy passed pawn if you're not able to stop it advance later. ( keep in mind that here to, the best piece to block passed pawn is often a knight and the best way to do this is simply to put a piece in the square right in front of the passed pawn)!!

key 3: if you play with a passed pawn try to control the square right in front of it!!!

pawns majority

just like a said early, a pawn majority is, by definition, the fact to have more pawns that your opponen in one side of the board (kingside or queenside).

key 1: When you play with a pawn majority, try to advance it if you can to control more space that your opponen in this side of the board!!!

That's finish for the pawns theory's!    bye ;)
