I understand the problem is how to distingush between the many who have crappy internet and the few who deliberately disconnect. I have no real understanding about the detection technology, but on a case by case basis, it sounds resource hungry. Not saying it can't be done. I read that users with lag switches have been banned from some sites, so they have caught some folks. I doubt that it's a real priority here on chess.com though; pretty much everything is going towards finishing V3.
players disconnecting third time should be warned and banned the forth time they

There seems to be something wrong with chess.com because I have noticed from time to time that my internet connection with chess.com seems to switch on and off. This does not happen wtih other chess sites so I would like to know what is going on.

No, I would guess it was your connection. It happened to me on chess.com when playing from a hotel the other night but thankfully I was able to jump on one of their other wireless connections and re-connect.
Other sites are worse when it happens, or at least lichess is -- if you get disconnected you seem to automatically lose almost instantly, no chance to re-connect.

I think chess.com may be the only browser based major chess site. Everywhere else you download a little program. Anyway that makes the whole thing a little shaky, but Erik likes it this way maybe for security reasons. So there are things you can do though:

noted that particularly from India the players repetedly disconnect for 1 - 2 minutes before they move, as if they are using illegal aids they consult. Server should automatically monitor and penalize. Agree, 4th time: out!
If someone is disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly, especially at a 1400 standard level, most likely they're not cheating but actually just have poor connection. It's entirely plausible that a lot of people from India would have lousy connections.
(1)every player has a flag of the country where they reside (2)poor internet connection is no excuse because when the connection is interrupted the screen changes, server advises of reconnect coming (3)often the connection is green and the server can count the player induced disconnects readily

Confession: I'm no more Kyrgyz than you are. It's possible to choose a flag other than your own.
I don't really understand (2). Why does it matter what happens when the connection is interrupted?
If the connection is green, that means you have a fast connection, not much lag. It doesn't mean the connection won't drop sometimes, although I would assume that it usually happens less. I'm not an expert on this sort of thing, but I'd guess there's no way for the server to tell the difference between someone deliberately disconnecting and genuine connection problems.

i had some power loses, my router some times gives me a hard time..... but when i reconnect i leave a message with an apology.

1. Your first point is wrong. I can have any flag I want. For all you know I could live in England, or Brazil or anywhere in the world.
2. Sometimes the page disconnects and you can't get back online in time.
3. Simply because the connection is green doesn't mean they can't disconnect because of bad internet.
I used to have internet issues, and I would disconnect several games, some winning, some not. 4 games is hardly enough to pin down a player.
Of all replies Baddogno makes the best suggestion: not that important, drop it. I agree. Under 1400 though the agravation remains.
If theconnection is that bad the servershould shot it down after a warning issued having recorded three disconnects. Also, the 3 minutes offered is too long, 1 min should be the most offered to the one who disconnects in rapid succession. It used to be 5min. then changed to 3min. The disconnecting practice is spreading so fast 1min. only should be instituted immediately.

I am posting this jn every forum because I want the fair policy 5 min wait rule to be abolished. Why complain about the disconnects? Just be patient and collect your points. You ppl that complain about the disconnect are the reason why I have to wait 5 min between games to play. I am currently on the b.s. fair play policy because I keep getting disconnected. Its callled having a life. I play at work, on the road, etc. If you are playing me, I am playing you while doing something else. If if disconnects, shut up and take your points, a win is a win. Be thankful it disconnected and know that if I gave you your full attention you woulda lost. Seriously why complain, I love wins. Besides it will take you no time to get to a full game. Meanwhile, I have to wait like 10 min to play 2 ppl. Because of this it is taking me forever to get my elo rating back to where it should be because at most you get 5 pts for beating me. So to all you ppl who keep complaining about disconnects and cant just shut up and take a Win. ...thanks yall have ruined this app for me. I already posted in the disconnect forum how they should abolish the fair play policy because someone who intentionally disconnects gains 0 advantage and is annoying at the most. I guess this app wont do that because you all non-disconnectors would complain. How do yall play this app and never disconnect anyway? Do yall really only play this app in like a designated area or smthn?mjmomb wrote: Why complain about the disconnects? Just be patient and collect your points. I am from India and what the OP said is true..I have lost about 130 games
due to my internet conn.being poor..donot know the reason as we are paying the Internet service provider like all others..out of300 odd games
lost , losing about 130 by abandoned notice is no good experience,
saddest thing some games lost as I had made the mating move and that
too pre-move and still the result -lost.. I would suggest instead of
internet conn...let them make it 3 mnts for 15 mnts and abov e games and
5 mnts for 30 mnts and above games where u have to make your move or
you loose, this would make players keeping the clock ticking when
they know they are losing the game ..only a suggestion..

Encore! I agree that if a person times out, be glad you got the win. If they don't, be glad they didnt time out and you got a full game :)

I am from India and connection in my place is poor. Stop complaining OP. Be thankful that they disconnected. Take your rating and be happy

In spirit I agree that something needs to be done...
My suggestion is more of a floating rating based on disconnects in the last x number days. Then a given player can chose if they want to play you or not based on your rating.
