Poor Time Keeping

I just lost a game to a stupid move... I admittedly played a move that would lead to checkmate in 2 but since my opponent only had 5 seconds I very well could have been saved by the bell... For some reason after my move 10 seconds were added to his time giving him 15 seconds... He won with a few seconds to spare which means he would have potentially lost if the time hadn't been added. This isn't the first time I've seen mysterious time slippages so I ask has anyone else had this experience and what is being done to improve the time clock?

I think I'm had a similar problem. I just played somebody and his clock ran to 0.00 multiple times during the game, but once he made his move his clock jumped back to 40 seconds or added time onto his clock. Could it have something to do with the fact that he had a poor connection? Either way he should have lost the game due to time running out far sooner than he actually did. The game was not set to add time after a move and I certainly didn't gain seconds after moving. Could anybody shed some light?

I have played thousands of games here. Today for the very first time I noticed my opponent's time was running significantly slower than mine. Anybody else with a similar observation?

Yes, I have seen this a few times. Its inexplicable but the site cals it lag. Not sure how to check it since it defies any real-time clock you measure it against.

I just lost a game that I thought the other guy abandoned. According to Chess.com, he made a move and I was the one who abandoned! On my screen, it was his move, and his clock ran all the way out - 7 minutes. Expecting to get the win at the end, nothing happened, the screen was frozen, and when I hit refresh, it said I abondoned the game and lost, and showed a move by my opponent which never occurred on my screen! Frustrated, because I was decidedly winning and this was a rematch.

The same thing happens to me all the time, presumably because I have a bad connection but two years ago on this site this problem did not exist. Since then, chess.com has made changes to their time keeping. Now routinely the following happens: I wait for my opponent's move, say 10 seconds, and his clock is going down. Then, when his move appears, *HIS* time goes back up nearly the full 10 seconds and *MY* time gets deducted the 10 seconds! Happens routinely to me.

I pay timewise as if it was me who was stalling but I was actually waiting during this time to see my opponent's move.

The staff here at chess.com make excuses about this, saying it's lag blah blah but the problem does not exist at freechess.org. There my time does not get deducted unjustly. There my timer only counts down when I see my opponent's move and it's ME who is taking the time to think.

Try using Chrome instead of Firefox... I haven't had as many problems since I  switched. I was told by tech support Chess.com does not support Windows XP. Also it seems if the chess.com server or your internet connection drops even for a couple of seconds the server has problems reconnecting even if your clock is running.

I've noticed that too, every once in a while, and I do use firefox. I think it's a matter of perception, though, at least for the most part.

You think that's bad?

I was playing this one guy and suddenly his pawn turns into a queen!!!

It's beyond logic, i swear....

3cardmonte

I think that's a glitch in the program. When I'm looking through games after they're finished, or going through, say, somebody's history of games, or even observing live games, the pieces will often disappear off the board or change from, sticking with the example, a pawn into a queen. You sure it happened live, while you were actually in the middle of playing?

ChubbyChuchu

Tech support said Chess.com does not support Windows XP and told me to upgrade my OS. They also admitted they have problems with Friefox and told me to use Chrome. Far fewer problems since I switched but chrome java crashes frequently... Unlike Firefox, Chrome lets me know java crashed and I can complete my game before restarting the browser.

3cardmonte

I've never had problems in game, even with firefox, although I'm on Windows 7.

its happened less often to me since I've been using Chrome, though apparently XP is a big part of it. I don't agree with Chess.com's lack of support for the OS. It has been the best and most stable OS to date as far as I'm concerned. I'd switch chess sites before I'd switch my OS.

Waana_o1

I've had issues with 3 day games where my timer reducers over the course of the game while my opponent's remains constant resulting in me losing the game.

Does anyone know what the issue could be?

Lost a game on time. I saw his clock run out, sign came up, game over but then suddenly came another move from my opponent lol and a sign that said í lost on time. Now he had 3 seconds and í 0.0. Lol. Now, what the f is going on here???

ChubbyChuchu

It happens way too often. They call it lag but I think its overcapacity on Chess.com servers at players expense. I have lost over 40% of my games to time (3 or 5 minutes) but I have only won 17%. That says a lot.

Time is not accurate in all mean.a connection not optimal = losing the game in time alsways, playing as fast as possoble the counter drop 10 sec every sec.

I agree chess.com time is not working properly or  not sure if any cheating on time
