Running the Clock

Recently, I encountered someone who apparently ran the clock on me out of spite, or maybe in hopes that I would offer a draw or resign or otherwise abandon the game out of frustration.  I know that it's technically well within the rules to do so but I still think it's really rude and inconsiderate, especially when you consider the fact that he was a "diamond" member and I have just a basic account which means that he can put me in a sort of chess purgatory where I have to choose between rightfully winning the game or taking a loss (and I've been working hard to bring up my rating) in exchange for being able to play another game, while in the meantime he can play another live game in a different window.  This was the game:

At any rate, I hope any readers might sympathize with the annoying situation.  It was only a 15 minute game and the clock started running around 10 so not such a big deal, but I felt compelled to complain a bit.  I'd love to hear anyone's opinion and any thoughts on the way I played.  Laughing

It is such a big issue there is an attempt to address it.

This is a problem for games longer than 10 minutes. No one ever lets the clock tick when the game is 10 or less. That is why I always go 10: just long enough to put some thought in, but not so long I'm in trouble if they let it tick.

If they are playing another game in another window, they just are guaranteeing you have a time advantage and they will lose. I would use the time to think of every possible move they have and your response to each, and then I'd do some chess puzzles in a book while waiting for their move.

Bad practice to post someone's private chat on these public forums, they've an 'expectation of privacy'.

Of course, since you provided the game 'number', it was simplicity itself to find the X-moves game and your opponent's correct name.
