Accidents are accidental, hence being forced to resign for them does not impair one's rating on the long run.
Except the concept of "resigning" gets ruined. You know, you could keep abort and make people lose rating points if they use it!

Fwiw, the pairing algorithm does try to find a different opponent than the one you just played every time you hit "New Game" instead of "Rematch". If you end up with the same person again, it's because that was the best or the only appropriate pairing available at the time.

Ok, if you don't like it, let's call the button "sacrifice rating points to abort". The display will change to "resign" after two moves.
I'm not sure the symbol is worth the hassle.

The abort button already exists though, so what's the hassle? Adding the punishment code shouldn't be that much trouble. And we get to keep a symbol untainted.

Thanks very much for all your input, guys!
I'm going to lock this down for the time being, just so any late-comers know that, although we haven't made any firm plans...
- Players will likely be able to continue using (limited) Aborts, similar to now... but possibly more limited than now.
- We will be making other changes to the pairing logic which we hope will make it harder to get rematched if you hit "New Game" - even if it means a slightly longer wait.

I can't, but it happened, so I aborted the games.
I suggest be wiser next time, or without an abort button you might have to play some weird time controls!

Perhaps in your case, that could be an idea I wouldn't want to have to play random time controls when I didn't select them!
I see by your other post you are rabidly anti-abort button and I'm not interested in convincing you of anything, just relaying my experience.

No abort= Everyone will resign instead=nobodycares about rating=no resign= stalling= breaking rules=everyone is forced to be a troll!
