Should we get rid of Abort?

OK all the way with DeepGreene.

What if the dang thing moved too fast and I meant to accept the challenge of the person near my rating rather than the person rated 800 points higher than me. It's happend a few times. I always apologize to the opponent and let them know it was an accidental acceptance (and to be honest, they probably don't want me either) and then I abort. I do not abuse it.

OK, I will write it one more time for those who don't understand it :

Accidents are accidental, hence being forced to resign for them does not impair one's rating on the long run.

Question : is there any single reason to abort games that is non-accidental (ie not caused by a mistake from the aborter's part) ?

KEEP ABORT - everyone mis clicks sometimes

I have decided that if this proposal goes into effect I will just choose to resign any rematch automatically. That should make me real popular. Free rating points for any one who wants them.

I say yes, because you clicked on the start game button, so you should play. Also, I hate people who search games.

Except the concept of "resigning" gets ruined.  You know, you could keep abort and make people lose rating points if they use it!

Fwiw, the pairing algorithm does try to find a different opponent than the one you just played every time you hit "New Game" instead of "Rematch". If you end up with the same person again, it's because that was the best or the only appropriate pairing available at the time.

Ok, if you don't like it, let's call the button "sacrifice rating points to abort". The display will change to "resign" after two moves.

I'm not sure the symbol is worth the hassle.

The abort button already exists though, so what's the hassle?  Adding the punishment code shouldn't be that much trouble.  And we get to keep a symbol untainted.

Thanks very much for all your input, guys!

I'm going to lock this down for the time being, just so any late-comers know that, although we haven't made any firm plans...

    - Players will likely be able to continue using (limited) Aborts, similar to now... but possibly more limited than now.

    - We will be making other changes to the pairing logic which we hope will make it harder to get rematched if you hit "New Game" - even if it means a slightly longer wait.

    Thanks again!

No, keep it.  I've been thrown into games of odd time controls that I didn't select, the abort function has come in handy then.  With no abort button I would be forced to play games I didn't want or lose ratings, pretty stupid.  I have not experienced this abortion abuse you all are talking about.

Select your time control then, in the challenge box.

You DID select it then, when you accepted the challenge. Everyone knows what time controls they will be getting in games, cmon.

    No.

Please explain then how you can suddenly get random time controls, without any mistake on your behalf?

I can't, but it happened, so I aborted the games.

I suggest be wiser next time, or without an abort button you might have to play some weird time controls!

Be wiser?  Like play on another site?

Perhaps in your case, that could be an idea I wouldn't want to have to play random time controls when I didn't select them!

I see by your other post you are rabidly anti-abort button and I'm not interested in convincing you of anything, just relaying my experience.

I am only replying so there is a giant quote box because I think it's funny.

No abort= Everyone will resign instead=nobodycares about rating=no resign= stalling= breaking rules=everyone is forced to be a troll! Wink

For the first time i'm thinking about a different site.

(I only posted under a quote since i like the giant quote box Laughing)
