Sigh. Was so and so a good sport?

Look, I appreciate the question.  Really I do.  I need to ask why you ask it.  Why does it matter to you if I think so and so is a good sport or not?  It doesn't matter to me.  Not at all.

Anyone I don't think is a good sport get blocked.  Period.  Simple.  If I answer your question to the negative does that mean you won't pair me with that player again?  I mean, that's what I would like if so and so is a bad sport.  Why futz with unclear questions?  If a player is a good sport why would I want to stop and tell you that?

I'm playing chess, or more accurately, bullet.  I don't have time for a mini poll of dubious utility after every game.

Where is the off switch for that silliness?

Thanks so much.

Its strange.

I'm curious about this, too. Are players' sportsmanship ratings being recorded? With what consequences?

If you click the thumbs-up icon (ie. yes, they were a good sport) you then get encouraged to say "good game", which feels a bit patronising. I suspect someone at chess.com has been reading up on Nudge Theory. I did the thumbs-up thing a couple of times then stopped bothering. I suspect I'm not alone.

They can always come back and post a string of profanities after I hit the thumbs up button.

@SpiderUnicorn It's great that it doesn't annoy you but it annoys the **** out of some of us. Are you saying that because you're not bothered by it the rest of us shouldn't be either? Or that we shouldn't express our opinion about it? I'm not sure what your point is.

The thing with this though, is that now, you have to go around the houses, to do any post game analysis.

Are you seriously answering it every time? You realize that's not required right? You can just ignore it and start a new game.

lol

I've never clicked it either way.  I'm honestly curious as to it's purpose.  That's all.  I also wish to turn it off and not "ignore it".  Is that alright with you?  Can you be a good sport about my thread?  Perhaps I should block you if you can't be. tongue.png

If it were me, I'd set a few thresholds that guard against false positives. Just for example:

1) If percentage of thumbs down is greater than 80% then check #2
2) if total votes is over 100 then punish account

What kind of punishment would make me laugh? I'm so glad you asked tongue.png

In fact I think they already do something like this... they have a hidden variable so that you're only matched with other rude players i.e. in this case that would mean other players who have a high percentage of thumbs down.

Then have a moving window so that someone who is a nice guy for years can't use his extra thumbs up to be a huge asshole for many months. In other words only count the thumbs up and down recorded in the last 90 days. Something like that.

So the answer to your question is it's even better than that.

Not only are you less likely to be paired with that player (if that player is habitually rude and you're nice you'll end up in separate pools)

But you're less likely to be paired with any habitually rude player.

So you block anyone who doesn't show you sportsmanship.  And you find no irony in that.  Once again, welcome to Facebook World.

Meh.  Sometimes.  Sometimes I do nothing.  Sometimes I send them a trophy, lol.  Sigh.  I am a small man with no friends and this my only outlet to power trip.  Don't judge me.  ....please.

As a society we need to start pushing back against this junk.  Like others have mentioned, this is a solution to a problem that doesn't exist.  If you don't like someone's behavior, you block them.  This is exactly what's going on in China where people have social scores.  At least you know where your money is going if you pay for a chess.com membership.   Don't think they're not recording all data giving it to someone.

I personally am in favor of efforts to improve civility and good sportsmanship on this fkd up website that is so full of trolls and a$$holes. Why not set a standard of expecting fair play and nice play? If it is so bothersome to you, (meaning anyone in general), maybe you need an attitude adjustment?

Yes, but the problem persists in that who has the attitude and who needs the adjustment?

Personally, that's why God made coffee. This reminds me my coffee maker has been granted audience!

I understand the whole "bull it" thing. However, the match ended. I think you have mistaken as you put it,

"dubious utility," for light-hearted banter. Therefore, there does not exist a bad sport anywhere on this site. Besides what are they proposing to do about bad sportsmanship. Boarding school in Paris? It's not that serious! Just my opinion but Shakespeare in King Lear wrote, " Satire is wasted on idiots." That is not to say you are an idiot. It was the only King Lear quote I remember.

Besides, I will never forget when my opponent at the downtown Denver chess tables screamed, "why must I lose to this idiot."

Come now where have I heard that quote before? I so not want to be a bad sport!

Ciao,

Interesting thread.

"Satire is wasted on idiots" - is that a Shakespeare quote? Are you sure?

I like that they ask if my opponent was a good sport. I answer it after most games. I think it encourages people to be respectful.

I think the purpose is two-fold. First, if you say no, then it asks if you would like to block that person from playing you in the future. Second, if lots of people are saying that someone isn't being a good sport the admins may want to look more closely at what is happening.

The block button is the most useful feature available here.
