I have noticed that most of the instability of live chess are in fact due to low avaiable bandwidth.
When I am home (300 Kbps ADSL just for me), I can play live chess normally.
But when I am at work (256 kbps shared by 20 users), sometimes I can play, sometimes the connection closes.
So, since bandwidth is an issue, my suggestion is to have an option to close (not minimize) the two windows that constantly sends information to my browser, the Room and the Control Pannel (because of the chat). After I finish a game, I could choose to reactivate the windows again.
