I see your point, but I slightly disagree. I think chess requires both equally. If that wasn't the case then why is computer chess so different then playing against a human? You can almost feel the lack of intuition..in my opinon anyway but bearing in mind I am a beginner. I think it can improve your gameplay providing you can clearly differentiate between the two, and take time like you say to think more precisely in long games.
What are the benefits of blitz to improve long time control play (overall play?)

I think there is another point against Blitz that I’ve never seen before: when you play Blitz your opponent probably doesn’t play at his best and makes a lot of mistakes. Many people say that to progress you must face strong opponents so blitz may not be the best way. Many times you just don’t have the time to make a good plan and take advantage of your opponent’s mistakes.
Anyway, blitz is great fun and I agree that is helpful to get more experience in your openings and to develop intuition.
I would say chess is FAR more about calculation than intuition. IMHO Blitz will do more to harm your overall game than help. I believe that in all things, it is better to go slow and be precise, and then speed will come with time.
