Let me start by saying "Dear God I suck at live chess". I have a 1388 rating at online chess, and that will be going up as a get more time to play. I have had as high as an 1800 rating on a previous account that I had to delete due to the email account getting hacked. Plus at least 4 or 5 of my losses on this account are due to timeouts I suffered when I moved into my new house and did not have internet for a couple of days. But enough talk about that, this is about live chess. I have recently started playing live chess, and as stated above I suck at it. I have a 1088 rating I believe. I thought that it might be because of the shorter games with less time to inspect my posistion, but I have played 30/10 games where I still make rookie mistakes that I would never make in online games. I think it may have something to due with that pesky clock staring at me and having some kind of psychological effect on me. Has anyone else had this type of major rating swing when switching to live chess? Anyone have some suggestions, other than stick to online chess, that could be usefull to me. I have also just started playing the sicilian as black, and the scotch game as white. I am not overly familar with either which may have something to due with it, although I doubt is the overall problem.

Yes I know my name is sum idiot, I picked it! Thanks for not being immature and giving me shit about it. It makes me giggle to think of an opponent thinking to himself "Great I just got beat by some idiot".

Haha, funny name. I think its pretty normal to have a lower rating in online chess, especially if you spend quite a bit of time analysing your online games. I am around 1850 in online and 1450 in live chess. I hate to say it, but "stick with online chess" is probably the main way to get better. Also, I really enjoy "tactic trainer". It teaches me to quickly find the hidden tactics of a situation.

Maybe you could also try playing with a higher ammount of time/game for now, like 20 or 30 minutes, then eventually go down to faster times?

Live chess here is silly.  Maybe because I've gotten used to other places first, or because I can't quite get used to the different feel of blitz when 2 second lag is introduced, but I wouldn't take it seriously at all.

Of course the lag might be because I play late at night, and get overseas opponents.

Blitz is so much different when your opponent's reply appears in less than a second... the clock starts to matter.
