what to do about poor sports who kill the clock in live chess?

I recall on playchess, some of the sore losers actually figured out how to trick the program into awarding them the win when their own time runs out. It would start with a series of draw offers, abort offers, and take-back requests that I would have to decline over and over. Then from there they would wait until the last few seconds and lag out, causing the clock to reach zero without flagging them. Then when you claim win on disconnect, it would award them the win by mistake. I was furious the first time some trixter did that to me, and I fired off a letter to chessbase but never heard back. Since then it's happened a few more times (all in the same pattern), so now on playchess I just resign and move on to the next game if my opponent starts that nonsense.

You can thwart this by not responding to any of their offers, their clock continues to run..... at least this works on ICC, not sure about playchess as I dont play there a llot.

Hey, I saw this game. You had a Q, a N, and two pawns against his lone K and you went for another Q. You are the bad sport.

we both started out with all the same pieces -- he had his chance -- so how does going for the win make me a bad sport?

i might not have opted for taking the easy way if he hadn't been complaining about how long i was taking earlier in the game when i didn't have as big an advantage -- by the end, i just wanted to get it over with.  i really wasn't taking a terribly long time for any of my moves.  people who are in a hurry need to abstain from joining long games.

If you want to go for another queen that's your business. Nothing to do with being a bad sport.

Yes, I'm currently beating a 2500 rated player in correspondence chess, and it's 14 day controls, so he waits for 13 days to make a move.  it will be a long tedious endgame.  You can look at my current games to see who i'm talking about.  He's obviously a poor sport who can't handle losing.  I just think it's funny that he lost to me and can't take it.

Seven days, so far I'll suppose.

Is funny how Spaceoddity talking about this even he is running the time out against a 2100 who got two Queens !

I've tried that and it doesn't work on playchess. These guys somehow manage to "confuse" the program by spamming all three options, and then adding some sort of lag near the end so their time runs out without flagging them. I could handle all that if it would award me the win, but awarding them the win via an exploited glitch is just too much to take. It's amazing the legnths sore losers will go to in order to avoid actually taking a loss like a decent human being.

Just inform the staff that that's the reason you're not playing there anymore. If enough people do that, maybe they'll do something about it.

Some players seem to be adopting what I call the "Duliba Method" named after former US CC Champ Edward Duliba. He advised that in CC you should move as slowly as possible and play on 6 months after you would normally resign. The reason is it annoys some people and many players become discouraged when they realize they aren’t going to win the event. His theory is that annoyed and discouraged players will not play their best so it increases your winning chances. Apparently some players have modified this method to fit live chess. Duliba also refused to play server chess because he believes servers have the dregs of the chess world playing on them.

When you think about it thats actually very logical.  I mean there ARE people who want/like to cheat so they can pretend to be something they are not, in chess as well as in other things. Where is the most likely place such people could go and do exactly that ?!  I mean, if some C or D class player doesnt want to play otb chess because he doesnt like being a C or D class player why should he ?  He can get a good engine and be higher rated player on some chess server than most of the titled players there !  To make it even more appealing its cheaper as well ! I know a C class otb player that plays here now and is over 2700 on this server !  If you wanna know who, just message me.

No, I never found any otb rating for him as he never gave his real name. The person I refer to is currently still here.

if you have a timed game then just wait it out , you came to play chess let the clock run as if the game is flowing to your liking, if you wanted blitz then dont sign in to a timed game. 15min is my min that i enjoy playing at , if i am faster than my opponent that comes with the territory more time for me to analyze. sit back and chill there are a lot characters on this site just play your game and enjoy life.Smile

Geek, I am STILL WAITING for you to produce the evidence that I ever said that you had never played Reshevsky. You said in another thread that I made " posts in various forums " in which I said that yet you havent shown anyone a thread nor a post # .  Whats the problem ?  If I said that I dont recall saying it and would like to see some proof ......

so i got a response from chess.com on that abuse report i filed.  i forget what they said exactly because i read it last night and it kinda annoyed me what they said and i'm in no mood to be 100% correct right now.  it was something like, "if it's just because of them running out time, there's nothing wrong with that, they could be thinking or dealing with a family member.  but if they clearly stated that they were intentionally doing it then that is abusive.  we can't take action against someone simply for running out the clock."  !!!!  someone on here said that they can see the chat that occurred between us when they review these things -- i guess they were wrong...either that or whoever reviewed my abuse claim didn't bother to read the chat log.  ugh!  why do i even bother?  i'm done caring about my score here; let the tricksters enjoy scores they don't really earn; it's not worth my time to deal with punks; i just want to play chess.  i'm done taking the ranking system seriously on chess.com

We are seriously going to miss you. Please, PLEASE don't drag your non-paying arse off to somewhere else, to enjoy more free chess. Chess.com won't be the same without you, we NEED you. Perhaps we can talk erik into paying you to stay.... would that work? Just say the word and I'll organise a petition.

modus,

a live moderator can check chat while a game is still going; we can't go back and see chat logs for games you've played.

just seeing that someone lost a game on time, we can't ascertain what the nature of the story was-- on what move they used the time, what the reason was, etc...

what you need to do if something like this happens in the future is ask for a mod in the main chat, and have them take a look at your game. they'll be able to see the guy's chat, and they will put bad feedback on the guy's account for you.

the feedback system will work, because people who incorrectly give negative feedback will face sanctions from staff; so they will be de-incentivized to do so. also the only ppl who will have access to negative feedback will be staff-- so it won't represent any kind of stigma on you that others see. it will just help us identify over time which members are ... less nice... and offer them some counseling. if that fails after some reasonable effort on our part, we'll show them to the door.

Reb, he can't find the old post, and it could have been deleted. so who is right will never be resolved. let's just stop talking about it.

I like to give this little gem when someone decides to let the time run out...

"Ah, I see your level of sportsmanship is even lower than your chess ability."

I really wish there was a way to block these people easily, so I never play them again. They are scum.

 Good advice.

happened to me otb too, at last year's national open. someone spent 50 minutes on the last two moves of a mate in two, while i paced around the room *majorly* annoyed.

added option: you can block such people. and if they accept your open seek, then abort, and try again. i know it's not perfect, but as i explained in my previous post, we will be dealing with this more in the near future. for now, blocking is a decent stop-gap.

 Did they explain why?

They're everywhere. I was at the world open last week and got stalled OTB!!! I was like NO WAY!!!! But it happened and I was shocked. Everyone around couldn't believe it either. It was my first big tournament and the guy was gonna stall a mate in one for twenty minutes. I sat there and waited until my opponent moved though. Luckily he didn't wait out the entire time but it was still pretty bad to watch.

 Did he explain why?

Not now while the game is still in progress, but when the game concludes please post it here and flag the position that you assess as lost for your opponent but also you acknowledge it will be a long and tedious endgame. Sounds a bit contradictory. If it´s a long and tedious endgame you haven´t won yet.

Again, it´s one of those don´t agree to a time control and then complain about it later. Are you suggesting the time control should be changed midgame...very funny.

I won't comment on the position but I have to say that his opponent is having an awesome streak where his opponent (half of them 2000 plus) conveniently time out or resign on 14 day time controls prior to even reaching move 20.

This has never happened to me OTB but it just happened to me in a game here in Live Chess.  My opponent blundered and made a losing move in a game they had won.  Once they realized it they let the clock run for 14 minutes.  I found it funny and I felt a bit sorry for them.  It must be sad to be that petty.

I just played with my cat, and had an iced tea while I waited for the clock to wind down.  :)
