Meditate for 15 minutes before the game.

Plenty of sleep. No alcohol in the previous 24 hours. Nothing else pending (chores and such). A small meal about an hour before playing. Plenty of good quality tea.

On one such day I played 11 rapid games in a row and won them.

I agree with the coffee and tea (both). Some aerobic exercise but I find lifting heavy weights seems to tire me out in some way. Music also helps.

Now that's enough giving away of secrets, I want my rating to go up, not down!

You can read or review some chess puzzles from books or online sources. You can review your previos games as well. Mike Tyson talks about how he is super nervous before a match and already feels lost. Then he gets to see the ring and he gets fired up. We know the rest of thaw history. If you are new to chess or have a million questions write them down. Then assess which are most beneficial to work on in your down time cv and incorporate into your game.

I think excellent sleep, a little exercise, good nutrition, some quite meditation, inspiring music & maybe caffeine are all valid ways to optimize yourself.
