Not to mention the American Revolutionary War...

Don't know that I'd count the cold war.  Thankfully that's a war no-one started.

Arguably JFK started it when he ran for the presidency on the bogus "missile gap."  Or maybe the US started it when they decided to cleave Germany in two and apportion one side to the Soviets.  Or maybe they did when they dropped the atomic bombs on Japan.

Name one war the USA started if you can. Maybe the civil war to end slavery but that doesn't count as it was USA shooting at USA.

Why is it ok for other people to shoot at the USA but when the USA shoots back it's the USA's fault, just because we (usually) bring a bigger gun? I mean, if the goal is to prevail you bring the appropriate hardware.

The USA ended World War 2 by defeating evil in Europe and Asia.

Any country that wants to start a war with the USA will likely end up a smoldering ruin and that's ok by me.

But hey I'd much rather make new friends and share a cookie with you, neighbor. Your choice.

You can't possilby be serious:

1.  The Revolution, The French and Indian War, The Spanish American War--I guess you can blame Hearst and Teddy for this one if you really want to; Mexican American War, Phillipine American War, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, Iraq War, Afghanistan War, and I'm sure there will be more.

2. "The USA ended World War 2 by defeating evil in Europe and Asia."  Ummmm, you really need to read some Russian, German, or British history.  Do you have any idea how many soldiers died at Stalingrad.  The U.S. came into that war very late, fought valiantly, but is hardly, single-handedly, responsible for victory.  Flush out your headgear, new guy.

3.  "Any country that wants to start a war with the USA will likely end up a smoldering ruin and that's ok by me."

Yeeeeeeeesh.

Why do you hate freedom?

I've got two words for you, Canuck:  Vimy Ridge.

If it weren't for Canadiens, we'd all be speaking German.

CrecyWar

For my Iranian friend.

You know, I had the opportunity to go to Tyne Cot and Ypres in Flanders in 2008.  There are still a few spots where there are visible remnants of trenches, giant craters and spent mustard gas mortar shells.

It's both chilling and incredibly moving to stand on the same ground, and to try to comprehend what occurred there less than 100 years ago.  I'd imagine Hiroshima (which I just couldn't make work on my Japan trip) and Auschwitz are similarly haunting.

I'd highly recommend it, especially to those in this thread who would (and did) simultaneously glorify and marginalize war.

I've heard that there are areas that are still off limits around Vimy Ridge because of unexploded ordinance.  Next time I'm in France, I plan on checking it out.

Did you hear about the tree at Gettysburg that died a couple of weeks ago.  It was full of lead!

OK time to stop glorifying and marginalizing  war:

I was searching for the right word and settled on "marginalize".  More accurate was "trivialize".

Yes, it was bothering me.

OK time to stop that too.

I'm currently being forced to read about the 14th century for my history class; as a personal favor, can you please make sure not to publish your book until the school year ends?

There- I fixed it (giving it the boiling lava look)

I couldn't believe it when I saw for the first time, a poster on here who calls himself Regicidal maniac, just a few minutes after I answered, saying it on here.

It was an incrediable time. Good luck. Tell me what book are you reading.

Part one of A Distant Mirror The Calamitous 14th Century by Barbara W. Tuchman, and from what I've read, it seems the only incredible thing about it is its degree of sucking.

Thats surprising. With all of the faith based initiatives at the time youd think it would have been a utopia.

No no no , everything was changing. You'll see. King Edward of England was really smart. What a great military mind he was. Good luck. I will try to finish my book fast, sorry.

Perhaps tomorrow I will post something regarding the Battle of Crecy.

Later.
