Why Abort?

Is it still possible to abort/resign less than four moves in without losing points?

If so, it could be that people are unwilling to play against certain openings.

Up to a point... If they abort too much, however, they ultimately lose that ability.. leaving them able to resign only.

That's not what kohai said...

RR, DeepGreene is correct on this.

1st and 2nd bulleted point on this page :)

You said in a previous post that you can no longer abort before 4 moves without loss of rating - which is correct?

If you have not over-utilized the abort feature (i.e. you see an "Abort" button), then you can.

If you have over-utilized the abort feature (i.e. all you see is a "Resign" button from the start), then you can not.

As regards your 60-second delay before the system terminated the game (no moves made), that's not the intention and certainly not something I've seen. If it happens again, please message me with the time of the (non-)game and the name of your opponent, and we'll check the logs. Thanks!

I can't really agree with this rule either. Personally I only get the resign button but I only abort due to inactivity. Sometimes people will literally sit there afraid to move because their rating is high and they don't want to play you or they're not paying attention. So I basically have two options:

A) I can sit there for who knows how long because my opponent will probably leave the thing on for hours to save his oh so precious internet chess points

                                      or

B) I can abort and play an actual game of chess

Unfortunately it seems that I have been punished for the latter and I really have no incentive to stop because people stall everyday I log on.

As of this week, if you are waiting more than 15-20 seconds for your opponent to move, there is something wrong. The server *should* now be auto-aborting games in those circumstances, with no consequences for you (assuming you aren't the one stalling). :)

I abort for two reasons only. One, when the other player is playing white and doesn't start the game. (It certainly seems that I have waited more than 15 seconds). Secondly, if I am tired and get pounded in several games in a row, I will abort against an opponent who is superior 100+ or more because my fragile ego can't take another whipping. I find this easier than resetting my selection criteria.

As for unusual opening moves by my opponent...love them.

Might it be possible when players abort to ask them to explain why they are aborting right then? Have a few choices to choose from and an 'other' box to type in an explanation if none of the choices available apply? Is that doable?

Haha! I thought about that too... Make people take a 10-question survey every time they abort even. :D

I like it:

  1. Are you sure?
  2. Are you sure you're sure?
  3. Why do you want to abort this game?
  4. Really?  Did you forget you ordered a pizza when you started the game?
  5. Who are you calling snippy?
  6. Is that kind of language really necessary?
  7. You know you can get booted from live chess for that, right?
  8. What were we talking about again?
  9. Was it about you wanting to abort this game?
  10. Are you sure?

Are the current rating options confusing, unclear, hard to find? I suspect (maybe wrongly) that a lot of the problem is still related to opponent ratings...

also i had an opponent abandon in the middle of a 15 minute game with 13 minutes left on his clock and i had to wait it all out while he did nothing at all. he didnt even resign, he just did nothing. is there anything i can do here?

I feel like this could've been me... I'm sorry if it was.  In one game recently my computer screen stopped working and by the time I had gotten it to turn on again the game was long over with.  In retrospect, I should have just turned off the tower so that the connection would have gone, allowing my opponent's win.  I apologize to who ever that was with...  Not my intention.

I use to abort games for some reasons:

- players that I have been played before

- due to some "strange" user names

- I avoid players from some countries

- sometimes no reasons.

However, aborting a game I don't find it as an offense, unless the options for selecting your opponent will be improved.

I don't think any single one of those reasons can justify the abortion of a game. You can already see the rating, nationality and username of the people that have active seeks in the game-graph, so isnstead of making your own seeks, enter existing ones.

I rarely abort, but when I do, I abort because I don't have much time, but I can get a quick game in, so I jump into a match. However, my opponent doesn't make a move for a minute or so, so I just abort, either because I wanna play another game, or because I no longer have time.

drewseph958

I just forgot, I used to abort a lot when I was just learning the tactics, and I wanted to try an opening for White, but when I was black, I just aborted.  I heard that I can choose what color I am (is this true?), but I can't find out where.

deeMannn

I have never aborted a game because it's just that a game.  If I am playing a player with a high rating that's better for me; because i feel that i am learning something especially if i lose the match.  I will play anyone from any country with any rating.  I have been playing matches where the matches are aborted by the server and i have been accused of aborting matches.   Also, if i am losing a match and i see no way of winning, I will resign before i even think of aborting a match.

wuhw23

before i just didn't see the rating option button on the new game tab but when i aborted a game and read the notice, i realized there was a button that chooesed what typle of players you could play example +412 -234

It's true, provided you're willing to play unrated games whenever you choose your own color:

The options in that drop-list that says "Rated" also include..

  • Unrated
  • Unrated: White
  • Unrated: Black

Thanks! You're doing a phenominal job updating us with everything! :D And I also just found out about the auto-abort thing, which is a great idea!

Also, I would like to thank you for a feature I was hoping for in Live Chess for awile now, and that's the thing that tracks how many games you've won, and how many you're opponent has won in a series of rematches. It's a great way to track friendly competition!

Bubatz

I only played one game on Live Chess so far because I only play slow games AND want to be really sure I won't have to abort then for some reason or other. The new rules sound good to me - except I really will have to remember that "15 sec starting rule" next time I'm ready to play.

There are no legitimate reasons for abortion.  You made the choice and accepted the risks.  Live with the consequence.

You may have right, however since the new rules were applied I have aborted 2 or 3 times because the computer selected the same players I have been played before. Sometimes I have a big advantage but the opponent doesn't want to resign, so I have to finish the game and either I loose my concentration, or I have poor connection and I loose on time. An then I must play again with them? No thanks.

It must be developed a fair play rating (based on computer analysis, not on users "like" or "dislike") and then you can choose your opponents with more accuracy.

There is one more thing should be solved. If for example if I am banned, I can delete my account and create a new one in a few minutes, so the "villains" will remain on chess.com further. I have been deleted my account several times and create new ones just because I was angry loosing a game with a weaker opponent...

It should be allowed to make only one time one user from one IP address and then you will see some improvements in fair play.

I have also accounts to other chess sites, they have some nice features but so far chess.com remains my favorite one.

qwn34

Who said to block the IP address?

"It should be allowed to make only one time one user from one IP address and then you will see some improvements in fair play."

To be more specific:

You are creating an user from - let say - a public library and you are banned, means, from that public library can not be created any new users but other existing users can connect further through that IP address.

I don't think there is a problem with that, if you want to create an user you should use your personal IP address.
