Why do people resign in a completely winning position?

This is ancient history now but I've just come across this discussion because I get similiar events - Players leaving the game. In the original game, the player OriSagiv played was mbscuba.

mbscuba 's account was eventually closed for violating fair play.

marcrob

Yes maybe - but resigning while you are ahead is a definite thing.

OriSagiv

Yes marcrob, you found out the answer in my case. It was probably a cheater who didn't want to progress too much into the zone where they really notice and take care of cheaters.
It didn't help him though, he was thankfully spotted anyway happy.png

Maybe he got banned in the middle of that game or something, causing it to auto-resign.

on nvm he played some more after that please ignore my comment

OriSagiv

I just checked that old game again and also reviewed it, my conclusions:
1. After reviewing it I see that was a masterful game by his engine. The fact that he resigned was probably why I didn't think of reporting him.
2. I wrote that it didn't help him to not get detected, but now I looked at his profile and saw that he did got "greedy" and crossed 2000 so that's why he was probably got detected, which brings me again to the sad fact I already wrote about in some other post here - that it's too bad chesscom doesn't detect cheaters until they "go too far" and reach 2000+ or something.
That leaves players like me and many other legit good players who didn't pass the 2000 barrier from the start when the rating isn't based yet and you get tons of points from every win, forever stuck in the 1700-1800 zone playing tons of lame cheaters who keep pushing us down.

marcrob

Yes it’s very annoying

I resigned the moment I have to go as I was secretly playing chess wink

I've done it because I didn't realize it was a winning position. Got really tilted and was in a bad mood for a while after that.

On Martin Luther King Day , 2024 the infamous game D.Kilari-P.Shankar was played in Philadelphia. Black , a 16 year old, resigned in a winning position on move 13 because he was extremely upset over a recent 9 game losing streak and his rating tumbling to its floor of 1800 after having been rated 2050 18 months earlier. His parents later told him that he had lost his sanity.

I know this game because P. Shankar (the player playing black) is me.

King_of_Checkmates

has this fate befallen anyone rated higher than 1869 recently? (1869 is the rating I was at before D.Kilari-P.Shankar)

An opponent of mine just resigned, which took me by surprise. The material was equal, I was attacking but hardly had an advantage and I notice he, playing Black, was on -3.3 with the last move, according to the analysis. Perhaps he had to go but I would have accepted a draw offer. His resignation put me over 900 and chess is difficult enough so these little windfalls are welcome.

Because it is just a game
