Why does live chess only have increment: why not delay too?

Why can't they have the option for delay too? I don't care if stupidity is an excuse. People should learn to deal with anything that could potentially benefit the site, like this one.

Well, chess.com has to figure out how to program that, and that effort might not be worth it if no one cares about it. It would clutter things up too -- then time controls like "1 4" or "15 10" won't give you all the information about the game (as the second number could refer to increment or delay).

I have never found myself caring about having the option for delay for some reason, and so few people care that it's probably not worth the effort and extra clutter.

Increment adds time to the clock.

Delay only keeps it from decreasing.

Bronstein delay is more complicated, your clock runs down, and then you get back either the increment or the time used, whichever is less.

For example, I have 25 seconds, and a 5 second delay/increment.

If I move within 3 seconds:

with a delay I will have 25 seconds

with a bronstein I will have 25 seconds

with an increment I will have 27 seconds.

However, if I have 2 seconds left and I move in 3 seconds:

with a delay I will have 2 seconds left.

with a bronstein I will flag.

with an increment I will flag.

How would you have 2 seconds left with a 3 second increment?

I think delay is very good for OTB,  but b/c of laging issues with the internet I think incriment is probably best.

You can earn more time with incriment by moving fast, with delay simply save your time by moving fast.

Delay is already programmed on chess.com, like in the 4-player variant. It should at least be an option, if not the default, in rapid games. It means you get a reasonable amount of time to think each move, but you can't spend minutes on moves multiple times in a row.
