Why is the Chess.com Rapid rating pool growing larger?

Hello everyone, I have been playing a lot more rapid chess in the last two months and at that time I was rated 1903 Rapid and was sitting in the 99.9% percentile. Since then I've played 50+ rapid games and reached a peak rating of 1981 and I was surprised to see my rating percentile drop to 99.6%.

All this to say, it seems that there are significantly more people on Chess.com playing with rapid time controls. Is this what you all are seeing too? I know that Blitz is generally the most popular time control on this site, but is Rapid chess making a comeback? What is causing this?

(Also feel free to share your peak rapid rating and your rating percentile!)

Rapid is the most popular rating pool since it includes 10|0. There are almost 2.5 more players in the Rapid leaderboards than Blitz.

I have noticed and wondered about the same dilemma myself..

I reached my peak of 2101 on Nov 8 2023 and was ranked 6668th in the world. Today, March 30 2024, roughly 6 months later, with a rating of 2073, I am ranked 12361…

Seems Rapid is gaining a lot of popularity lately 🤔
