Why not? He got a checkmate...
In chess once you progress past a certain level playing for cheap tricks will get you nowhere. Always assume your opponent will make the best moves when analyzing..

This opening is called the patzer opening, I kid you not ! LOL
Indeed, with good reason too!

yeah, the "patzer opening" has gotten me into a mess a few times... can you suggest any good openings?

There are lots. Keep playing openings starting with 1.e4 until you have a reasonable "grounding" in the "open games". Lots of beginners like the Italian Game which starts with 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Bc4 and if your opponent replies with Bc5 I recommend either playing 4.c3 or the Evans Gambit with 4.b4 which if he accepts allows you to play c3 followed by d4 with tempo..

One suggestion i've got for you never take the queen for a ride in the very beginning of the game, it's never good, first stablish your position, play Both Knights and (if possible) Both Bishops, if you want to play your queen and then castle or first castle O-O and then play your queen, you only get your queen out when you find it reasonable (f.e.: when you get ur Knight in F3 hanged by the Bishop, play always h3 in order to attack the bishop and if Black decides to trade it, take it with the queen (not with the pawm) remember that you need to stablish a very strong pawn defense in ABC-FGH sides in order to castle).
You should try the Italian game, the one i made in my game. But always analyze matches with Queen's Pawn Opening and try it once you feel ready.

Here's a game that i played recently.
So you've decided to stick with the "Patzer" opening then?

I didn't much understand some of your opponent's moves, but overall that was much better. Simple strong play!
Btw, it's refreshing to see someone willing to learn something around here..
