On Tuesday January 21st and 28th the West Orange Chess Club will be holding a United States Chess Federation Quick Rated Rapid Event. There will be 4 rounds (2 rounds each week) with a time control of 20 minutes per game with a 5 second delay before each move. This event will not count towards one’s USCF Regular Rating but will count towards one’s USCF Quick Rating.

Here are the tournament details taken directly from the online registration form:

2025 WOCC January Rapids

Once you sign up, you are registered for this event unless you contact Stephen Lorimor at 908-286-0720 (voice or text) or sdlorimor@comcast.net.

This form will close at 6:00 p.m. on January 21. On-site registrations will be accepted until 6:45 p.m.. Late registrants may be given a half-point bye in round one. We STRONGLY recommend signing up online.

Tournament information:

  1. This tournament is four rounds, Swiss-style – two games per week on January 21 and 28.
  2. This is a Rapids-only tournament. It will NOT affect a player’s regular/classic rating. Notation is optional for this tournament.
  3. The first game of each evening begins promptly at 7pm. The second game will begin shortly after round one is completely finished. Make-up games are not available.
  4. All games will be USCF-rated. A USCF membership is required to participate. (Don’t have one? Email me.)
  5. The time control is G20 d5.
  6. The tournament is split into three sections.

Beginner: Under 900
Intermediate: Under 1600 (min 800)
Advanced: 1600 and above (min 1500)

  1. Up to two half-point byes are available for the first three rounds. If requested before the start of round two, one of these byes may be used for round four. Otherwise, byes must be requested by 6:00 pm on the day of the game. Byes requested after this time may not be honored, or may be worth zero points at the director’s discretion.
  2. Bye requests, questions, and/or notices that one cannot attend a game should be phoned or texted Stephen Lorimor at 908-286-0720, or e-mailed to sdlorimor@comcast.net.
  3. Registration: $25 ($20 for dues-paying members). Dues for 2025 are $10 (just $5 for West Orange residents, anyone under 18, and anyone over 50).
  4. Prizes: $15 per player will be allocated towards that section’s prize pool. The exact nature and value of prizes will be determined after the tournament starts to reflect the distribution of players in the event.
  5. All games will take place at the West Orange Chess Club, located at the Toby Katz Community Center, 650 Pleasant Valley Way in West Orange. (It’s tricky to find — take the access road between the high school and baseball fields. Look for a little building at the end of the road.
