The Tower of Terror

If your opponent has castled on the Kingside, and you can land a pawn on their g6 square (or if they have White, their g3 square), you have what GM Danny Gormally calls … the Tower of Terror.  A pawn on g6 attacks h7 AND f7 – the two weakest squares on the board.  In addition, it will probably block the g7 (or g2 for white) pawn from advancing and giving the King an escape route.

Planting a pawn on g6 (or g3) is an infrequent event, but spells almost certain checkmate when coupled with the Queen, or rook, or a combination of bishop and knight.  The plan to attack and plant a pawn on g6 is usually totally unexpected and, therefore, crushing.

Join Doran Race, West Orange Chess Club's Vice President of Tournaments, to understand how to attack g6 and plant your own Tower of Terror on Tuesday August 27 at 7:30 PM.  Admission is $5 per person.
