Wait a minute, what about 1. Rc4?

Any Bishop move would follow my original line [edit: with Ke4 in place of Ke3], and any Queen move can be met with either Kg2# or Ke3# depending on the circumstances.  Most importantly, if 1. ...Qxb5 2. Ke3# is checmate becasue the rook on c4 now blocks the delaying interposition.

Can anyone see a flaw in this?

hmm wait.. i think that works.. :)

no it's not.. the first move is the rook move.. 1. Rc4, then any move by black, 2. Ke4#

if you want to go in one move, it's not possible.. because 1. Ke3 is an illegal move.. you're moving into check by the queen!! Wink

huh?

I believe 1. Rc4 is correct and black is in zugzwang.  It is needed so that black can't play Qxc5 and then Qe2 to block check.  White needs to move move the king next to deliver mate.  :)

uglyduck

white to move then two moves Kd3+, Qg4, BxQ#

rjboy

solution:

just try all the pussible reply for black after 1.Rc4

it is mate in 2 moves...

Any move by black 2.Ke4#, except 1... Qd4 (Ke3#) or 1... Qe4 or 1...Qf4 (Kg2#).

huh?? the king is on f3 at the start.. how to jump to d3?? and how is black able to move Qg4?? that's an illegal move..

everybody, it's all over.. the answer is revealed.. Rc4 is the correct move.. then a king move to mate..

mwb21089 -- your reasoning is headed in the right direction, but not the last word... and I'm confident saying that because everything you've posted has been discussed, thoroughly, on the first page of this thread. Everything except the bit about how since black only moves twice it's somehow mate in two... that's just bad lawyering. If you read this page, you'll find the solution; it's been posted.

gumpty

KG2 is mate in 1 for white...

M_M_

THREE MOVES.... 1.Ke2...Qxb5+ 2.Kxe1+...Qe2+ 3.Bxe2#

gumpty

sorry for being an idiot....its 3am here. Kg2 isnt mate, its an illegal move LOL.

trthorson

1. ke2...

then unless this is followed by  1. ...Qf5

2. kf1#
