I just bought Beginning Chess by Bruce Pandfolifini, and on test 1 puzzle 7, if kf1 - g3, its mate. But can't ph2 x kg3? Can someone please explain why this is not a thing?

The black pawn plays in the other direction. It could capture a piece on g1 (if there was one) but not on g3.
