Can white castle?

Who says white can't castle? I just did it for both queenside and kingside in scid.

Korchnoi beat Karpov in the 1974 candidates with  a 19-move brilliancy (http://www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1067831 ). Before move 18 he had to ask the arbiter if castling was permissible when the rook was attacked.  Apparantly the issue had never arisen for him before.

Nobody gets that this is a hysteresis puzzle?

Avatar of MrEdCollins

Yes, we get it.  But I busted the puzzle.  It is possible for White to castle in that position, long or short.  I proved it with the pgn I created.  The original poster, based upon his subsequent question to me ("If White can castle, what was his last move?") seemed to indicate that White couldn't castle.  I don't think he's posted anything since.

And yes, of course White wouldn't want to castle, when he can win both rooks, but that wasn't the question.

And yes, I've heard the Korchnoi story before.  Apparently some GMs need to bone-up on the rules too.

"well it depends on the past moves" isn't an answer, it's merely pointing out the obvious question, answered by Mr. Ed.

First, your quote is not from any post in this thread. Second, you're being intentionally dense and chosing to ignore my point. Third, your bogus quote does NOT point to the obvious question, because the obvious question was not asked by the OP!

Just what in hell is wrong with you anyway? I don't know if you're trolling, stupid, or insane. My bet is all of the above. Regardless, you're not worth any more of my time.

Wow! That was an impressive blow-out, especially for a Saturday. (Maybe you are working today and that is why you are uptight?)

Regardless, it's best to relax and be cool, there's no need to be uncool. You saw it eventually, no need to get offended that someone else thought it was obvious.

If this was a legal position from a game could both sides castle?

Avatar of SaltedTomatoes

I'm a bit too lazy at the moment to create the scenario, but at best 1 side would be able to castle long AND short, whereas the other side would only be able to castle long OR short, depending on the rook that moved. So yes, both sides would be able to castle, although one side would only have 1 possible castling option.

If this positions was from a proper and legal game and it was white to move could white castle now?

Avatar of SaltedTomatoes

Yup, so long as white hasn't moved his rook or king. Same idea from the original post the MrEdCollins solved.

Avatar of BlessedStar

well what was white's last move?

Avatar of SaltedTomatoes

Could have been a number of things. BUT, for giggles, let's say Qe8+ KxQ

The idea is the same, white moves, and black takes white's piece making it look like black is back in the starting squares. Doesn't have to be a sensible move, but it IS possible.
