Of course! One of the greatest of all time. Perhaps my very favorite??

BTW, his full name is William Anthony Shinkman.

got it! 1. Rf4, threatening Rf3#. only way for black to prevent mate is Bd4, cause if white then plays Rf3+, black king can take the rook on c4. So white just moves this rook to b4, moving it away from the king and threatening Rb3# AND Rf3#. Now all blacks moves are useless. if black plays Kc3 -> Rb3#. If black plays Bc3 -> Rf3#.

This realy is a sweet puzzle

So

1. Rf4 Bd4 (forced)

2. Rb4 Bc3 (no better move)

3. Rf3#

Well, the listed solution is how I saw it as well.

However, after 1.Rf4 Bd4 2.Rf3+, black cannot play 2...Kxc4, but he can play 2...Be3. Also, I don't see how 1...Bd4 is forced. Black has 7 other moves by my count.

oh yes, you're right, knight is still protecting the rook there. but indeed, Be3 would prevent the mate also (at least for some more moves)

and if black plays any other move than 1...Bd4, white will play 2.Rf3#. I could be wrong with my definition of forced. but as i see it a forced move is the only move that prevents mate (at least in the next move)

1.Rb4 Bd4,  2.Rh4 Bc5  3.Rb3+ mate am I right

rooperi

no, still not, the bishop doesn't have to go to d4 on the 1st move. there's only one move thar forces that, Rf4
