It's better if you let people who aren't using engines work it out first.

I did not use an engine.I just realized that if the dark square bishop move away from a3 along the a3-f8 diagonal, black could only prevent mate with Bxb2(Kxb2,Qa3#)(Nc2,Qxc2#).However,after Bxb2,if the white dark square bishop is on f8,it can take the black queen and checkmate.

Sure.

Turm_Breuberg

Easy for regular problem solvers.

Mating with the R/B-battery would be far too obvious for a real problem. So look out for spectacular keys which can only be played with the bishop.

There are similar and even more hilarious versions of this theme. Watch the following classic mate in 4 problem. If you know this, finding Bf8 here is just a small exercise.

I am sorry in my previous message I had written whites move as Ra2 dis +, but it should be Rd2++#(1. Rc2 + if Nxc2, then Qxc2+#, and if....Kd1then.2. Rd2++#), I hope I am right this time ! am I ?

Can someone please explain what good Bf8 is going to do. Is this sarcasm?

The threat is Qa1#

nooddles68

I'm sorry but that assumes certain moves from black. As my previous solutions have been wrong, here is a new try. (I'm assuming that the solution leaves black w/ no options remembering that the puzzle asked for mate in two.)

Rb1+ Qb4

ps. Can someone point me toward a forum that explains how to make examples like Scottrf just posted? Thx.

Scottrf

It doesn't assume anything. Give me a move by black where white doesn't mate in 1? I already said the threat is Qa1# if black does nothing to meet this threat.

akash7867

Bf8? will be answered by Kxb2. then what? ...So is it Nxe1?, 1...Qd1and 2.Rb1++#? or if ....Bxb2 then 2.Qc2+#?

This assumes a lot, does it not? Perhaps it would be answered by Bf8...

Kxb2 is in my diagram. Qa3 is mate.

I see your point.

texasaboy

i have it rook moves left then black king up right then queen goes down twice and right twice

BoxzNick

Okay, here is the diagram where it will be clearer to understand!

Kudos to the composer for a nice puzzle!

Correct me if I'm wrong but black king cannot move to b2. It appears to me that it can only move to d4. (How did you create the expample above in the 5th post?) Though I see now that my solution would not work for mate in 2 as the king can still end up @ c3.

sorry, I had edited it :)
