Does everyone use this process to play puzzles?

I learned long ago that when playing puzzles in the app on my iPad, I can click the home button and leave a puzzle that was proving too difficult. I do not get penalized for an error. So it has become habit to mentally work the puzzle and unless I can mentally solve it, click out. Using this process, I can earn rating points by only “playing” if I believe I have the solution. Is this what everyone does?
