This is from a game I played OTB this weekend.  It seemed kind of puzzlish/tactical, so I thoght I'd stick it up here.

P.S.  First puzzle post for me, sorry if I mucked it up.

P.P.S.  Yes, I know white has a better 1st move, but this is how the game played out.  Bonus points if you can find the proper defense for white.

Could you find a better move for white?

 Maybe 2. Rf1-h1

2... Qxg3  3.Rg1   Qh3+

So it looks like that just drops the knight.

Blunder! I didn't see that. My day job is distracting me.

Maybe something like this?

Then what after Rxb2?

I think the best plan is e6 followed by Qc7 to guard g3.

Rf2 seems a better defense although I would play Bf5 as a response. After b2-Rook moves, Rxb2 wins a pawn and opens the Queen-side for more attacking pieces. White has plenty of fight left and so does black. The a-pawn could possible give black some trouble if white can get into a good defensive position after the King is safely out of harms way (trade pieces to reduce the number of attacking pieces).

ok ok I didn't see the rook x b2 pawn thing.

I like the idea of the 2.e6 block, BUT how much does that open up the f-file?

White can reach rough equality in terms of piece count, but positionally, it looks like black's got a superior position, and if he can get the dark-squared bishop into the fray, it will be all over . . .

EDIT: Hmm, that last Queen move isn't too good, is it?

daxelson,

not 7.. Qf2+

but perhaps Bf5 instead, threatening mate on h3 and the rook b1.

e6 block! how does that work? and how can the queen move to b7 when black's rook is there to take it?

Sorry, should have been Qc7.   I've edited the post to avoid further confusion.
