why can't i get amuzing positions like that in my games. i love being able to torture people who think they are on the cusp of victory and then just smash their dreams.

I was actually under time pressure in this game and missed this mate. I was only able to force a draw.

It's always good to see some good zugzuengs though. The more you see, the better your end game.

Incredible. I too was only able to force a draw. Never expected this. I'm glad i saw it because my end games really need some improvement. :p

Refreshing and educating. I'd have probably offered a draw without thinking twice. Thank you.

A similar puzzle was up on the daily puzzles sometime last summer. That one had pawns on b2, c2, and d2 blocking the way for the queen. It ended up being mate in like 12 or 13.

This is a cool puzzle. It's not zugzwang though.

White mates easily if black is allowed to skip a move.

1. Qf3 pass 2. Qe4 followed by 3. Qb1#. Skipping a move doesn't help black, so it's not Zugzwang.

The translation of Zugzwang is "compelled to move" (or "compulsion to move"). The meaning in chess is that the side to lose is losing because they have to move a piece, i.e., they wouldn't lose if they could just leave all their pieces right where they are. This isn't the case in this position.

If the black king just stays in the corner without moving, he can block any check along the rank with g1=Q.
