Hintless Puzzle #1

Spoiler Alert ! Answer will be given down below so you have been warned.
This puzzle and in future was provided by Leonard Barden which appear in the Western Australia 'Sunday Times' also in 'The Times'
Levon Aronian vs Paco Vallejo Pons, World Cup 2005.
Aronian won the $1.5 million event but said afterwards he was dissatisfied with his performance, a strange comment from a grandmaster achieving his lifetime best result.
But today's diagram explained it: only by good fortune and the help of his opponent did the 23 year old avoid a disaster which could have knocked him out of the tournament.
Though Vallejo Pons (Black,to move) is bishop for two pawns down, his doubled rooks on the seventh menace the white king. Whether through time shortage or a total misjudgment, the Spaniard now continued with the bizarrely passive 1...a6 ?
Instead, Black has an immediate win, and there are two ways to do it. Can you do better than the grandmaster ?
Answer: 1...Rf3+ (or Rh3+) and if 2.Ke4 Re3 mate or 2.Kc4 Kc6 ! with the winning double threat Nb6 mate or Rc2+ Bc3 Rxc3 mate, if 3.Rxd5 exd5 mate.
nice! i had it right. but there was one line that kept bugging me as it didn't seem puzzle-like.
all other lines seem to lead to nice little checkmate, but this one doesn't.

White will be down 3 pawns and a rook with a king on the edge -- regular puzzles you win a knight or a few pawns and that's enough -- to be winning this much is certainly puzzle-like.
fair enough. but when every line leads to a pretty little mate except for one, then it makes you wonder if this line also doesn't have a trick to it.
thus my point of saying it wasn't puzzle-like.
though i see what you're saying. if kco had posted a position that provides no clear tactics and just an opportunity for you to slighly improve your position, it would just as well serve the purpose of finding the best move without any hints.
one way or another, i thoroughly enjoyed working through the lines of this position and im looking forward to the next ones.
should put you on a trial for defamation
