How to beat an IM

Beating someone with the title IM is different from beating someone at IM strength. Andrew Buguiser was a strong GM at his prime but now 2000 strength, does that mean beating him is an achievement equivalent to beating a GM at GM strength.

Ofcourse it doesnt . Many people will beat such an old and declining titled player though and then crow about their victory to all while failing to point out any of the details , which they know will detract from their victory and their crowing .  Another thing happens on the net a lot as well .... All GMs get a free account on ICC and other servers as well . I know a GM on ICC that hasnt used his account in years , in fact he hasnt played chess in a decade or more , he took up golf !  However , his account is still active on ICC and his rating there is falling consistently . He isnt playing on his free account there but I believe his wife is , she is about 1900 FIDE .  So , people who play her and beat her think they are actually beating a GM when they are not ... I believe this happens frequently .

Also, beating someone with the IM title is different from beating someone with the IM title at chess.

I could beat a GM at golf maybe, but who cares, they don't give GM titles for golf. Neither do they give GM titles for 3 minute chess.

While it seems pretty harsh to beat someone with an IM title - it's certainly way better than beating them with a club or with a pointed stick. IM titles cannot do quite as much damage.

Statistically, people rated 1900 and up should beat and/or draw an IM a certain percentage, though small, of the time. There's nothing wrong with boasting about it - this is one of the things that add color to the game, that a weaker player can on occasion rise and make a result with a much stronger player.

You can probably only be sure that you've actually beaten an IM if it happens OTB, or if at least you know the person and you know that it was him (her?) playing.
