Here was my thinking. I got the first move correct instantly. g4 prevents the king from going to h5.
But then you have that f4 pawn. So, I spent 5 minutes trying to work the knight into it to take the pawn. I couldn't get anywhere with it. Then, I thought "Can I trap the king somehow with my king and knight?". This led me to another correct move, Kg8. However, you need the knight to be on g8 to check the king, and there is that problem with black playing Kh8. White won't be able to get to it.
Then, I put it in Stockfish and I won't say the solution more, but it has to do with the h8 square. Interesting.
Thanks for the response. My first idea was queening the f pawn. When I realized that was impossible l noticed the black king was short of squares but at the time couldn't figure out the correct maneuver for a mate.
I'm really just interested in hearing your thoughts process. I usually have problems with this endgame type puzzles.
White to move.
