Actually the solution can be easily found with a program. My Houdini had no problem calculating mate in 3 instantly even though the position is illegal.

 

The solution had been given multiple times already (sometimes with bad analysis though). 1. Ne4 is the answer, so your friend was wrong. What's absolutely amazing about this problem though, is that black has many different replies, and it seems that for each reply, white has a different, unique key move in response. That is quite a feat to achieve in this crazy position...

 

Just to cover your 1... Bg7 line, I show every legal black move
