that explains why I couldn't get the first one...

it's mate in 4...

still cool, though.

I only counted 3 moves.

i knew first one is mate in 4. but 4th one useless move so did not include. anyway u all  brilliant players.b"coz i struggled to get first one as i was watching the game,  when the game declared white won before mate as it happens in most of the GM's games

It's a mate in 3.

First one is mate in 4, got it right though.

The second one was easy.

Not in the solution. Please show the mate in 3.

You're right. I didn't think about the night moving h6, but it's a useless move. So it is indeed a mate in 4.

rook mate reminds me of a carlsen rh file mate....

The first one isn't a mate in three, which is why I eventually plumped for the line that was mating (in four). The second one was ridiculously easy. Got them both first time.

In fact, it's not even mate in 4, but in 5. Rybka suggests 1.Nf5+ Kh8 2.Qxg6 Rf7 3.Qxf7 Qxf2+ 4.Kxf2 and mate next move.

When I solve problems here I never look to the themes. Thus I was not «polluted» by the mate in 3 announcement. I noticed 2...Rf7 but found out that it could only delay.

honestly not that hard.  Problem with puzzles is that they are just that.  ya know its a puzzle and its called "mate in 3"

it did take a good 45 seconds though..

I got it first time without mistakes. I had to think about it for 15 minutes though before I moved. Second was easy

sara_manju

please solve this one for me which is also declared won but how?

BrianO66

There is a mate in three.....consult the move list. Yes I did get it but I had to think really hard for three minutes and it hurt

Saw both solutions within 3 seconds or so.  In the first one had to make sure there was no tricky defense or something so it took an additional 30 seconds or so.  Luckily I didn't see the hint "mate in 3" or it may have taken longer because as others pointed out, black's moves aren't forced.

what helped was knowing how many moves you have towards mate. The knight was obvious move-pinning the pawn, then the knight had escape covered of king, so why not Queen sacrifice, and one thing leading to the next. The second one was easier:) Thanks for post!

This isn't a puzzle with a tactical solution, it's just white has no threats, and black is about to win the a3 pawn (i.e. win two connected passed pawns) after the bishop moves, so white will lose eventually.

"Solve in 3", the first one took a while to see; the 2nd obvious.

Question:

How long do you think it took Alekhien to see this move? If it took me 15 minutes, I guess he saw it almost immediately..? Just a thought...

Doggy_Style

First one, two minutes.

Second one, ten seconds.

Alekhine would have seen the finish some moves earlier.

solved both...:)

1st one was tough ..took quite some time to figure it out..

2nd was quite easy...!!

ditto...in first attempt!!

good one

How on earth could anyone solve the first one? It was a mate in FOUR, not a mate in three.

Of course it's impossible to solve that puzzle as a mate in three. Anyone who said they got it easily is fibbing. Or they can't count to three.
