Enjoy, from the Fried Liver, i mate a found while analysing =) this is from a real game, but it is a move off course. so any helping now would not help, because my opponent did NOT play Nxe5.

The mate in five is not forced, Black should play 17. ... Bxd5 instead of the tempting Nxf3. Anyhow, what's the point of finding a mate in five when you can mate in one?

17. Qf4#

lol, and that is why I should always look at a move for longer than a minute.

/cue embarassment

That's OK, but now you have to buy pizzas for everybody.... :)

17...Bxd5? 18Rxe5+ KxRe5 19Re1+ Kd4 20 Qe3# is one way to do it.

Chaos

Incredibly clever (Morphy like) mate.  Good observation!

I could not get beyond Bxd5 which seems to win material in every variation I tried.  TY

I meant 17 ... Bxd6; Bxd5 was a typo. I think you can escape mate by Rxd5 Qxd6 Qh3+ Kf7 Rxd6+ Nc4 Bxc4+ Ke8.

edit: Nevermind, missing a lot of obvious moves today. Excellent puzzle!

um Rxd5 Qxd6 Qh3+ Kf7 Rxd6+ Nc4 Bxc4+ Ke8, nice analyse! shame you missed the blatantly obvious Rd8#... lol.

hey this puzzle actually works!

Bxd5 Kxd6 i believe, dangerous as it is, escapes mate in 5.

Egad, this is snowballing.  Yes, 16 Bxd5 is way inferior to your Rxd5.  My earlier 17...Bxd5 was responding to virax's original suggestion.  He has since corrected himself meaning 17...Bxd6 which is also what I meant.  Lacking a personality, I simply followed his lead.  My white 16 Bxd5 does not lead to mate in anything I looked at (except the obvious ....cxd5 17 Qxd5#) but does seem to gain material in practically every variation.  The king is just too open.
